What is the difference between a polyphon and a record player?

Did the polyphon evolve into the modern record player? Or is comparing a record player to a polyphon like, comparing a playstation 3 to an 8 bit nintendo? Yes they're both game machines but different technology makes them what they are...

Think of polyphonic sound as you would a music box. It can make more than one sound but it has limitations.

A record and a player are entirily different animals.

A polyphon just had a metal plate that made music by raised bumps in the record or cylinder you put in it. It wasn't recorded music or voices like a record player. Like AlOne said if you know what a music box is, it was one of those.

Thank you, Doc - you said it better than I could.

Ah, like those old funky little music boxes. The shaft thingy with prongs spun around and cause metal "keys" to chime. But a polyphon is just way more round rather than a cylinder?
