I don't believe that it's the only way, though it's presented as such by immoral individuals (sorry if you feel that's too generalised).
Drugs are unlikely to alter perception to that extent. More likely, just make you feel worse later for being deprived of a choice.
You shouldn't be forced to go through something like that. If you don't want to do that, ever, that's perfectly fine. Perhaps you've heard of the ace community? I know you're uncomfortable talking about it, but I'd just like to point out it's not so contemned these days.
