How would you take this if you were a manager?

We have sidework at my job like a lot of other jobs. That being said first, so you know I understand that.

However,

The other day at work I had been there past the time our schedule says I was to leave and I got kind of fed up with one of our managers telling me to do a job for him and then I could go home.

But see it's not ever just a job for this manager and then I can go home. Once the job is done, I'm asked to do another job, and then I can go home. And sometimes even when that job is done, I'm asked to do something else, and then I can go home.

So I finally got frustrated after months of this and realized I'd rather he make a checklist of things to do, let me do those jobs, and then let me go home. Don't keep saying do this then you can go, oh and do this other thing and then you can go, can you do one more thing for me even though you're here an hour after the schedule says you can leave? And then you can go?

This has gone on and on for months.

Last week however, this particular manager was actually going to just let me cut out at my scheduled time off. This particular day, our district manager was in the store and she asked me to do a specific task before I was allowed to leave.

I agreed and went and did it.

Once the job was done, I was ready to leave, and then the manager that was going to just cut me and let me go in the first place decided(while the district manager was in the bathroom) he wanted something else done before I left and changed it again. And started doing that crap described above. Again. "Go do this other thing for me before you leave."

A little context:

This manager had arrived at 4pm after I had been in the store since an hour after opening. I was one of two day employees working the shift. This manager had about 8 other employees coming in for the busier shift at 4pm and is also the time he arrived and started barking jobs to do when I had already been working there all day.

So here I am now in the back of the store doing the additional tasks and seething, and the district manager walks out of the bathroom.

I look at her and point to the other manager through the walls who is in the front of the store saying something like "how can any member of management say to do one thing, and then change it up once it's done, not be seen as lying?"

The district managers face changed and she said "Well I was in the bathroom." and immediately went and grabbed the manager I was complaining about and offhandedly announced that I feel they're all liars and that I have a problem with management. And then kicked me out of the store.

Haha.

My question is, would you have taken what I said personally as if I had personally called you a liar? It blew me away that she could even think I was including her in that statement of fact.

For one, my statement included absolutely no accusations at all. And because I pointed in the direction of another manager I thought for sure she wouldn't have been stupid enough to think I was calling HER a liar personally.

If anything it's a hypothetical question that I would ask anyone. "If someone says one thing and does another, how can that not be potentially seen as lying?"

The point is, I had a complaint about one of the managers. I took it to his boss as is accepted by our open door policy and she took the complaint back to the manager I was complaining about and threw me under the bus.

I'm about to go to the district managers boss(the owner) and explain this situation to him. Because now the district manager is being a bi*ch to me every time I see her and I haven't even seen the other manager I complained about since it happened.

If I were the district manager in that case, and an employee of mine was saying that to me, I wouldn't fly off the handle like that I would have listened to the employee and figured out wtf is going on. Wouldn't you?

There is a difference between "side-work" and the alotted time of day.
Eight hours is eight hours. Now, unless there is written agreement (ALWAYS get it in writing) that you are to exceed more than a given number of hours of the work day, time and a half shall be paid out.
I've worked for very large and proud companies where the mergence of more than one manager was often the case. Every one of them is self-important and none off them know the "lower staff" on a personal basis (in the working sense). In other words, we are an assortment of tools for their delight.
They don't like to hear, "No Sir, I have already been given my final directive for my shift, you will have to find another employee or wait until tommorrow."
....But, they'll live. And sometimes you gotta know the labor laws and verbally remind them - they just can't fire you for lack of performance after a given amount of hours, or refusing a further directive beyond the work day.

As for them being liars. They ARE liars in every personal sense of the word. It's just that it's so natural to them, it's feels right. But, don't say anything that would call this to their attention because it has a profound effect on their ego and power structure. (Women, in particular are sensitive to these things and it triggers their radar.)
In anycase, you may want to call it to their attention that it is by the works of the collective which is making themselves liars and not necessarily the individual.
Better luck at your next job - lol!

You voluntarily stayed late to finish a task you could not finish in a normal shift. Bingo! They found their pasty. Work a bit harder so you finish your work on time. If he asks you to stay late, apologize and say you can't. Simple fix.

Well, I could have finished it earlier in my shift. Although I wasn't asked to do it at all until after I was supposed to have left. It was mentioned among other workers earlier in the shift. But it was also mentioned that everything else was done and there were three of us there. We were completely caught up except for that little thing(which was not at all the end of the world). It's true that I meant to actually do that one little thing if I thought about it before I left. But I forgot. Because frankly it's not like it was the bank deposit it just wasn't that important. It's still not. Never has been. Never will be. But if my manager thought it was, she would have been on us more than just mentioning that it's not absolutely perfect? Maybe asked me earlier to do it when there WAS lots of free time?

But you bring up a good point. A very good point. And I think you're right.

My problem has always been, I never wanted to be the type to get asked for help if I was capable of helping, and turn around and just be like 'screw ya' but I don't want to be a pushover either.

I can tell you one thing though, if it's my kindness that's been taken advantage of, I'm not kind anymore. I still do these things out of mere habit. And I only do that because if I immediately switched to acting how I feel, I'd end up in jail. So I'm just sticking with the status quo until I can figure out how to change this concept people have of being okay to treat me like a pushover.

So if it's any lack of spine on my part, I've grown it. Now I just have to figure out how to use it without murdering people with it. It's taking some time.
