I can see myself it's a golden sunrise

Opening up my eyes
It's supposed to be my day
Now off I go horizon bound
And I won't stop until I've found
My own kind of way
And the wind will whip my tousled hair
The sun, the rain, the sweet despair
Great tales of love and strife
And somewhere on my path to glory
I will write my story of a life

And all the towns that I walk through
And all the people that I talk to
Sing me their songs
And there are times I changed my stride
There are times I can't decide
Still I go on

Realizing now that life's not fair
At least I found and met him there
And for a while we had our time
And though he saw my dreams go poorly
Still he joined my story of a life

But every chance I take don't mean a thing
What variations can I bring
To this shopworn melody?
Every year goes by like a tollin' bell
It's battered merchandise I sell
Not well, you can see
And though we've heard it all a thousand times
Couched in your attempted rhymes
How to march to your drum and fife
The question echoes up before me
Where's my magic story of a life?

Sometimes words can serve me well
Sometimes words can go to hell
For all that they do
And for every dream that took me high
There's been two more that's passed me by
I know it's so true

And I can see it clear out to the end
And I'll whisper to myself again
Despair it has been rife
For more than all the ghosts of glory
There never really was my story of a life

I was just getting ready to say that I hate poems almost unilaterally, but for some reason I read through this one twice and really enjoyed it. I guess I should have known it wasn't someone's original work here on Helpy help. Had me going for a minute though...

I grow tired of the plaigerism. The least, give credit where due.

I never took credit for this I just reworked it to fit MY current situation. It's not plaigerism i'm not taking credit or making profit off someone's work! That's so stupid.

I'm a huge fan of harry's and I identify with some of his work and was feeling this particular song. You just blamed me of breaking the *******fucking law that's just stupid!

Thank you Ralph. Harry Chapin was very straight. Do you know how hard it is to re-write straight story of a life into gay story of a life? It was almost impossible because harry's so straight LOL
