So.....

I'm getting house internet for the first time ever in my life. I am getting an introductory plan that has 80mbps with "unlimited data" per month for $60/month.

I have been "shopping around" and comparing prices, and most companies have a cap on the monthly gigabyte use (100 for example) and once you hit that, the speeds slow down.

This prompted me to call the company I have scheduled to come install on Dec 1. They said that speeds DO slow down. Once I hit a terrabyte, they slow to 40mbps.

I think a terrabyte is a TON of usage, but I'm not sure. I currently have 30 gig between 4 cell pbones that we got for the first time 11 mo ago.... and when we do a lot, we run out of data (and internet crawls) about a week before the month is up. I also use my phone as a hotspot for my printer and desk top, which uses it up really fast.

I have 3 teens, 4 TVs (that we just rent blu rays for)... and I would like to stream/watch movies any dang time I want to. We also have 2 room mates in our basement...one who is sick and watches TV all night long.
I feel like we might be getting a good deal, but it almost seems like a "too good to be true deal" as I'm shopping around.
How easy is it, realistically, to reach a terrabyte?

I don't think that you would get to the terrabyte... what I would be worried about is the introductory offer... What does it change to when the intro is done?

And... if I do reach a terrabyte and my speed slows to 40mbps, is that a concern? Or is 40 a speed in which you can still do what you need to do?

I am also going to keep our cell phones with the 30 gigabytes per month, just to be on the safe side....

I honestly don't know... I would think that 40mbps would still be fine. But I'm no expert by any means.

Yeah... I'm no expert, either. All of this is like a foreign language to me...

But, I'm tryin' to learn ;)

I guess.... "introductory" in this case refers to people who have never had this before.... which I can't imagine amounts to many customers because I was sorta the last person I know of to get a cell phone... and now the last person I know of to get house wifi....lolol

A Terabyte is 1000 Gigs.
Here's a clue -
I rent movies from my local outlet and sometimes buy them from pawnshops. I usually make a digital copy and store them on an external hard drive.
In this case, I have a 2 Terabyte hard drive and have over 2000 movies stored on it. So far, it's about 75% full. I figure it will hold about 2500 movies. So -
1,250 movies of audio/video data is a lot of digital data to store on a one TB hard drive. This has took me years to fill, so I don't think you're going to make your capacity.
Also, you may want to re-evaluate your 30 gig phone plan, you'd be surprised how much you don't need (try half if they offer that plan)
Like Padre says, their introductory is sweeter than their standard rate. Find out how much different it is.
Most customers get pinched by proud servers, but they won't do anything about it - they just keep bending over.
There is NO reason, no excuse, that the cost of communications is as high as it is. It's ALL greed based operations.

It’s all dependent on use.
There should be guidance online somewhere we’re you can punch in what is likely to be used.

Where I live I can get up to 500mbps. I don’t need that much as I’m mostly here by myself. My line is 100mbps to cater for proper streaming and downloads.
There will be more load when everyone is on at the same time, so you basically just have to try and see.

I would say it’s importent not to have a binding contract so that you can see if it’s enough and be able to change if need be.
It can also be good to search around a bit for good deals and also to call them up and complain about everything as you then might get additional data for free.

A colleague of mine called the cable company two or three times a month to complain and managed to get a lot of extras for free.
This is if you have the conscience to do so.
The companies rip people off anyways.

Agree in the assessment of greed based; and communication should be cheaper for sure. Remember the days when we had to lool someone or something up in a phone book? Those phoone books were so handy, I would keep one in my car...they even had maps! And then along came the internet and you could look up people and places online with "white pages." Now, you have to pay to get info....not that I'm a stalker or any such thing ;)

And thanks for the knowledge of what a terabyte is. I think I will be fine and not run out of data. I have never had house wifi, so I just didn't know how good it would be (or not be).

I'm in a 2 year contract (a little over a year left) with the phone plan. So that won't change anytime soon. Also, today we got our 2 oldest their own (first) phones, so the 30 GB "might" (?) be necessary. I will pay attention to how much we use and cut it down when I am able if need be...

Thank you so much for the advice :) I have a terabyte of data each month and the speedbis 80mbps, much slower than yours.

There is no contract and rates/plan won'tbchange for as long as I own the house.

There are only 2 companies who supply home wifi in my area and I checked with both....
