There should be a law that if you are a politician, you're just not allowed to have any investments in anything.

Conflicts of interest.

Regulation on social media companies? That's gonna make my facebook stocks less valuable. Who's gonna build those tanks we need? Let me tip of a friend in the Defense contractor I have stock in on the current bids.

It seems so obvious to me at this moment.

Thoughts?

There was a book I read once (a fantasy novel) where the one country all of the people in government had to sell ALL their property, stocks, etc. and the money was put into the treasury. They were given comfortable if bland government housing, clothing, etc.

When their term was completed they were given back their money adjusted based on how well the country did economically. If the country made a profit, they got a little extra, if they were at a loss, they got less. And they couldn't make a profit by raising taxes.

One could not refuse a nomination, or choose not to do the job. If they did, then their property was sold anyway and added to the treasury, and they were imprisoned/executed.

I think we need a less extreme form of that.

The idea of registering for public service draft is interesting to me.

Lano, this is something we can totally agree on. It IS so obvious and it blows me away that it's even allowed.

I think attempts are made to control shady dealings. But your absolutely right it's a conflict of interest in the first place. Anything that offers a financial incentive in any way is a vulnerability to our leadership. If it can't quite be justifiable legally it sure as hell should be justifiable ethically. It should be a general policy of the political system not to allow it.

I wonder how many politicians would just not bother running if the rules changed tomorrow.

Perhaps only the ones who wish to be real leaders and stand up for a correct government. Rather than be full of greedy c**ts who only care about making themselves richer at the expense of their country.

So..I bet some, but probably not that many.

They'd all just stay home like "frak party's over"

Maybe we do need something less extreme, but you have to admit it would get the job done!

This would be a horrible way to do it...

Just put the stupid people on an island...an island, on Mars, and that'll do it. It's far less, stringent for everyone. And leaves the best and brightest of humanity to thrive and become the best species possible here on Earth.
They will come up with a perfect system of government because they're not held back by stupidity. They'll call themselves "The Masterpiece Society."

Keep it simple!

Btw I am absolutely convinced that's why the race to Mars. Has to be.

We just had our primary elections last week and it was really sad. A senator from Tennessee was retiring (Lamar Alexander) and his hand picked replacement also got the endorsement from the Donald. Of course he was a political hack who has never done anything but work for the Feds, his latest job was ambassador to Japan.

His opponent was a guy who is a surgeon and whose parents are both physicians that immigrated from India. He seemed like an incredibly intelligent honest hard working man from an incredible family but of course he lost because he didn't have any connections.

Politics is such an inbred society these days. We're never going to be able to move away from the good ole boy mentality, they're all in it together. It doesn't matter what they invest in, they can control the money to flow to anyone they want. If they don't have any investments they make it flow to their friends and their friends hire their wife and kids as consultants at a few million dollars a year... power corrupts.

Sad. I'm a former Tennessean. Hated that ****shit hole by the time I moved out though. Lamar and his buddies ran it into the ground I guess. Something went wrong. Sad to hear they're still beggin for it to get worse there.

I completely agree.

I the UK at least it seems to be becoming a bit more obvious with brexit and the virus.

All the politicians who wanted brexit stand to profit in someway, whether it be less tax, or policy changes. Then in the midst of the virus, politicians seem to be awarding contracts to each others partners, family, or friends. Its shady as ****fuck and I hate it.

ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THAT EVERYWHERE.

People are selfish af. Especially if they got a little power it makes them worse!

I can't help but believe we are perhaps all naturally defective that way.
