I received an antique knife as a gift.

It's about 100 yrs old, blade seems aged but not rusted.

Would sharpening/polishing the blade devalue the knife?

Only if you will be putting it to use, either daily or weekly. If it is only to be a display piece, a little bit of light machine oil will do wonders to preserve the blade in its current condition. Sewing machine oil should do the trick. Ask a neighbor if you don't have any. For as little as you need no sense in buying a full bottle.

truth to be told i tried using one of those carbide sharpeners.. and apparently with the poor design it stripped the mid section of the wide blade... had to scuff it to hide the damage. stupid me.

On an old knife scruff marks are common. Like a badge of honor really.
