To the students .

To the students at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida: the nation grieves with you in the wake of a senseless tragedy. We know that you are searching for a cause, something you can pin down and change for the better. These efforts are commendable. However, you have been led to fixate on guns--I have seen your signs calling for the banning of AR-15 semi-automatic rifles. There are problems with this fixation. First of all, to ban these guns would violate the US Constitution. Secondly, you would deprive millions of Americans of these firearms--Americans who use them in target shooting competitions, hunting and for home defense. Only a small number of people misuse firearms--in 2014, a total of 248 people were killed by rifles--including the type you want to ban--while 1,095 were beaten to death with fists, feet and blunt objects. Another 1,567 were killed with knives. I know you want to DO something, but giving free rein to your emotions is not the best way to accomplish sometime positive. Consider that we had a computerized background check system in place, but that it was not properly used. Frankly, our FBI let us down. The shooter was well known to law enforcement--they had visited his home some 39 times--and the FBI received credible threat information about him a month before. All of these things should have been entered into the background check database. If they had been, the shooter could have never legally purchased a firearm. You are right--you should be angry. But you should not be angry at law abiding, responsible gun owners--you should be angry at those government agencies that let us all down. I will tell you that the answer is not to tear up our Constitution in a fit of grief or anger, but to focus your grief and anger where it belongs--on the people we hired to protect us--and who failed us. I hope that when you are adults you will also work to protect our freedoms--and will not let terrorists, criminals or mentally deranged people take our rights and freedoms away from us.

More over it happening again and again. Once is too many! If it were a plane crash (Concord) they'd ground all the planes.

I don't understand what's true with the media, but the FBI is being labeled as really dysfunctional or harmful. Trump is just a distraction.

So the exact words of the second amendment are:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

'Arms' is not defined, so banning certain arms would not be an infringement, as long as you have access to arms. Do Americans also have the right to weapons of mass destruction? Because nukes dont kill people, people kill people.

(I'm not saying I agree or disagree either way, I'm just interested in the debate)

We know the Founders' intent from reading their papers. Their intent was for free Americans to own standard infantry arms of the day, e.g., the British Brown Bess musket, French Charleville musket, hunting rifles and pistols. The idea was that an armed citizenry could be quickly formed into infantry militias.

The Amendment did not refer to crew-served weapons, such as cannon--or nukes.

The Founders knew that a disarmed citizenry would not be capable of defending the state, or themselves--hence, infringement of this right was prohibited.

The militia were defined as the whole of the people--back then defined as all males from 16 to 60.

But some Nix-like women fought, too!
