Hey guys, bit of help needed (pretty UK centric though)

Anyone got experience looking for counselling/therapy on the NHS? Work have a mental health package but I'm struggling this winter and I could use a boost since I'm bloody terrified of going to my GP!

To be honest with you the first approach should be to your GP and asked to get referred to a counsellor/therapist .... once that has been done there will be no need to see the GP for this kind of help.

Only if the GP can see if will of help to you .... if not the GP will always give you the best advise on what to do next based on your situation.

Just be open with him/her and you will get the help you need

"I'm bloody terrified of going to my GP"..... tell the GP of this and he she will more likely refer you to someone you feel more comfortable with .... this alone is worrying ... I dont like Dr's but in the end of the day I always find they do the best for me.

Its more GPs in general, I struggle with asking for help and tend to go to the doctor only when frogmarched. Last time I had a chest infection so bad I was getting miniscule amounts of oxygen compared to what I was supposed to... It might sound stupid but me being ill/not normal was such a huge hassle for people when I was younger that I always feel I'm time wasting and theres nothing that wrong with me

Maybe I'll just make a bullet point list and take that with me when I manage to schedule something!

you can self refer, thats what a gp advised me to do. I think its IAPT in my area, it could be different for you. Try typing your city and IAPT. Or this link might be useful https://www.england.nhs.uk/mental-health/adults...

I know how you feel, I was the same until I finally broke down in front of one GP, she was fab and helped me so much. Unfortunately she left and I don't trust the other doctors enough yet to open up.

Thank you Puddin, that's really helpful. I didn't realise you could self refer, I'll definitely look into it. And thank you for the understanding, I hope you find a doctor you can open up to again!

I think your best bet is to go and talk to your GP?
You need a full assessment and once that is completed then he will refer you straight away.
Make a list of everything you need to tell him. So many times people have gone to open up then clam in the last minute.

Here we have a councilling service you can self refer to and they assess you what type would be best for you, so like group or individual. Hope you find something in your area

there are IAPT services depending where you are, annoyingly the one in my town closed but they've replaced it with a Healthy Minds service. both of them are self referral so no GP involved, but your gp can also refer you to them depending how you want to approach it. my gp referred me to the IAPT service here about 4years ago now and they did wonders for me though there was a 3month waiting list. luckily my dr was amazing and he made me go see him for an appt every week to check i was ok and not headed into a crisis

Thats sooooooo not fair, I contacted mine today and they said theyre just getting to the ones that applied at the end of april, I applied on 3rd of May and was told it would be another 2-3 weeks :( I live in a big city so I guess theres more people waiting.

And I hope its not a group thing otherwise I'm so not going.

cbt can be done on a 1:1 basis, thats how i had mine and how we're learning about it on my uni course. but it can also be done in groups - its just super versatile.

Mine was done within a group. It was only one on one initially when I was interviewed. I found it better being with people who also had the same issues.
