when i was a kid

we lived in a white ghetto in north carolina called "The Projects" now most people that lived in those projects back in those day were poor irish whited oppressed on all sides by alcohol, semi drug use and more and more alcohol.
back in those days i didnt know many black people, other than the jeffersons and the walkers, i think finally like in the 5th grade we had a couple black kids in our class, i remember going over to one of their houses that year, way far out down by the tar river in rocky mount nc, and they lived in a little stone house by the river with no running water or electricity, i remember him distinctly going out back to the well and drawing water with a bucket, and i thought, wow and i thought we were poor. after that i had very few encounters with black people till i was in the army and i worked alongside a few black guys from louisiana and i remember when i was leaving to go to another duty station one of the guys came up to me and shaking my hand and saying, thanks jim, you made me change my impression of white people and i was like what why, and he said, i hated white people (folks he said) until i was stationed with you, he said but you always treated me just like any other person and never showed any sign of what most white folks show and i was like, um well i was always taught to treat people like you want to be treated man, its no special talent. and we shook hands and i split.

Sometimes all it takes to make a difference is being yourself.
