I need math help

I saw this problem on facebook,

50+50-25x0+2+2=?

Now, I was pretty proud of myself that I got 4, and thought all the other comments were wrong, but then i used a calculator and the calculator got 104???

I just dont get it, why is it putting the multiplication in brackets? even my dad got this wrong and he is awesome at math

I would get 104, based on how I was taught in school the order of operations are. I think it may be things have changed since I was in school though.

I was taught PEMDAS = Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. Where multiplication and division have equal priority, and addition and subtraction have equal priority.

Since there are no parenthesis or exponents, according to PEMDAS you mutliple 25x0 first. that gives you 50+50-0+2+2

100-0+2+2

And from there it's easy to see how I got 104.


Important to note that order of operations is pretty arbitrary. It's just how a bunch of academics decided that the language of math should be written.

The order of math operations is PEDMAS, so the answer is 104. My calculator isn't as smart as yours, it gets 4 every time.

A calculator does not perform PEDMAS, it performs each operation as soon as you enter it.

50 + 50 = 100
100 - 25 = 75
75 x 0 = 0
0 + 2 + 2 = 4

here is a break down

50+50-25x0+2+2 .... yo do multiplying first .... so it now becomes
50+50- 25x0 +2+2

25x0=0

so its

50+50-0+2+2

so its

100-0+2+2 =104


104 is correct answer
