IT Question: Networking

We're moving next month and have to keep Comcast. I don't want to pay a monthly fee for their poor quality modem/router combo anymore.

My brother in law suggests getting a Ubiquiti router but I would also have to buy a separate modem. It's just my husband and I. We're not huge gamers, just light streaming.

Anyone have any suggestions on what modem I should get? Should I just not even bother and get a modem/router combo?

This is the Ubiquiti Router I'm thinking about getting: https://www.amazon.com/AmpliFi-Ubiquiti-Seamles...=sr_1_7?keywords=ubiquiti+router&qid=1580489892&sr=8-7

This is the modem I was considering: https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-Cablevis...=sxin_3_osp35-81d0faf8_cov?ascsubtag=81d0faf8-4c25-4993-855b-3d4b46d09234&creativeASIN=B016PE1X5K&cv_ct_cx=modem&cv_ct_id=amzn1.osp.81d0faf8-4c25-4993-855b-3d4b46d09234&cv_ct_pg=search&cv_ct_wn=osp-search&keywords=modem&linkCode=oas&pd_rd_i=B016PE1X5K&pd_rd_r=b5a8b04c-9663-4ff1-b213-8a08b7f282f4&pd_rd_w=vnnks&pd_rd_wg=oSKse&pf_rd_p=eb3e5cda-5ec9-4d94-919d-310a5d641b8b&pf_rd_r=X8FZ3X9AV6GVCVSAEBBQ&qid=1580490064&sr=1-1-32a32192-7547-4d9b-b4f8-fe31bfe05040&tag=heavy0013-20

What do you think? Any help would be appreciated!

I've used this router since the stone age - it's never let me down. Even works during power outages, too!

Good timing on this post. The March issue of Consumer Reports has a rating of at least two dozen routers. Make sure it is compatible with WiFi 6. That is the newest standard that was just set. Get it now so you don't have to upgrade later.
My pick would be the ASUS AX6000 (RT-AX88U).

My pick would be to go from a 30lb polymer fishing line to a 90lb nylon. Because of it's high tensile strength, you can stretch the line tighter than ever! This means you can almost hear your conversation in mono.

Love the ASUS but it’s definitely out of budget for me right now. Also, I’m probably just getting a 100 Mbps connection as it’s just my hubby and I and neither of us will be doing anything that requires high bandwidth.

What is WIFI 6? I know 2.5 & 5 - I’m behind on technology :(

If I went with your pick, I wouldn’t be able to respond to messages like these lol

Tbh, I had Comcast for years and never had consistent speed issues with their internet. Especially for streaming. I streamed a lot of videos and I play online games too.

I had a consistent problem with Comcast's prices though. I always thought they're too high. They're essentially a monopoly.

As far as network protocol versions they're just that. I would guess v6 is just a version after v4.

Do not spend a lot of money on a router. If you can buy one and stop renting from Comcast that's great! But it doesn't need to be anything fancy for light video streaming. Streaming video recommends something like at least 3 or 3.5mb/s and that's technically all you need. If you have some kind of 20mb/s connection you're way good to go for streaming video. Router is not going to help if you think you're having speed issues. Streaming video just doesn't take that much.

I've heard Comcast has throttled some connections to certain services in an effort to steer you to theirs instead. Of course this is news after I stopped using them. So I can't know for sure. You tell me? lol

Yeah, I have no option but to go to Comcast. There’s no other option 😡

That’s a good guess for v6

I feel like my internet has slowed down over the past few months so I don’t know. I hate Comcast but I have no other option.

There is an option.
You can tether your smartphone service to your computer.

Maybe be your own wireless hotspot.

The signal would be abysmal.

funny thing about comcast.. when i moved they created a new account for me and gave me the starter price.. big win, but over time they really pack up the cost every year.

im thinking of switching to verizon internet only pack .. goes for about 49.99 minus the modem

Yeah I saw that the Comcast deal is going to jump from $39.99 to something ridiculous like $79.99 the second year. I wish I could switch to Verizon but they don’t have fiber optic in the neighborhood where I am moving. I would rather use those tin cans than DSL 😂

I had Verizon at my parents house and loved it.

Not sure where y'all are scattered across this 3rd rock from the Sun but if you live in the contiguous 48 a new player is coming. Starlink is the concept of SpaceX to bring high-speed, low-cost internet to the masses. They have 240 satellites in low orbit already. Fairly soon they will have 360-400 over North America and go live to all of us this year! Personally, I can't wait.

There are a few sites for tracking the Starlink satellites but this one is by far the best. Satellites are visible at night to the naked eye if the view is clear of clouds.

Google has an internet service. It's called Google FI I think. If it's in your area that could be an alternative
