The end of a long trip--from the Southern USA to Canada.

We traveled 1,858 miles in the last two days, skirting the really bad weather, and through the grace of Divine Providence, avoided being caught up in an accident that left four people burned to death. This was in Columbus, Ohio. Quite horrific.

It seems that most accidents are caused by people engaging in sudden, risky maneuvers--or simple inattention to driving. We saw quite a few people texting while driving. We saw truckers drifting onto the shoulder of the road while eating sandwiches. And then there were those obnoxious truckers who would pull right out in front of you while you were going up a hill, and make you wait on them until they finished passing other vehicles by going 1/2 mile per hour faster than the vehicles being passed.
That obnoxious practice is illegal in Continental Europe, by the way.

The border crossing went smoothly. If anyone is doing any traveling that originates from the US or Canada, I strongly suggest getting a Nexus card. There are special "lanes" for security checks at airports and at US, Canadian and Mexican border crossings. You can reduce your border crossing wait time from an hour or longer to 2 minutes or so--and it typically saves me two hours over the poor schmucks in the regular security line at an airport.

Can't wait to go back in the summer--it was too cold for most of my planned projects this time.

I wish the Alabama Shakespeare Festival was putting on some real Shakespearean plays this summer. Perhaps we'll see "Starstruck," which is about a struggling Jewish family during the Depression. Who wasn't struggling during the Depression?

I suppose it's good to be back in the Canadian home . . . but the "nanny state" still grates against my soul, and the first thing I saw when descending into Toronto from the Gardener Expressway was a beggar. A young man.

If countries can afford foreign aid, why can't they afford shelters, job training and jobs for their own people?

My grandmother lived in western NY state when I was a kid and I had a great aunt (her sister) who lived in Canada. We used to go see her all the time and never even got out of the car once. They just looked inside and waved everyone on through, I'll bet those days are long gone. Of course there wasn't a lot of international terrorism in the 60's, probably lots of drug smuggling but the authorities acted like they were clueless then.

Help me with:

I need help.
