This guy I was best friends with birthday is coming up.

Several months ago he told me he couldn’t be my friend anymore bc I was going through a lot and so was he and he couldn’t handle being my friend. A couple months ago I reached out to see how he was but the conversation was short lived. His birthday is coming up and I’d like to text him a simple happy birthday but I don’t know if this will make him upset. My birthday was a few weeks ago and I was sad he didn’t text. I don’t want to make his birthday about me so I wanted your opinion on if I should text him or not.

Just a simple "happy birthday" with no further expectation of conversation should be fine. If he feels ready to talk, he can take it from there. Otherwise, you've only let him know that you wish him happiness on his birthday.

No text. If you know his address, mail a card. No return address. Just sign it so he knows who it is from.
Sending a text is too easy.

I would probably not make any contact just in case he's still vulnerable and it could hurt him.

You’re right. I just want him to know I’m there for him. I think it just makes me sad that we aren’t friends anymore and I don’t really understand why.

I have been in a tricky spot before when I wanted to show my friend care, but it just would have hurt him. It's hard, but good to respect how people wish to be treated, very especially if they're in a fragile position. I still get sad that I had to stop being friends with him, but sometimes it just can't work and that's okay.

I recommend forgetting all about him. He is not life mate material. Do not waste your time.
