....emm, no, but it seems to have gained your interest.

I clicked the link and read the article. First, I don't like the journalism - it's neither complete or serious.
I also find discrepancies that are in the key of oxymoron. If not then, what is obvious becomes stark - if there is an increase in alcohol consumption, it follows that alcohol related deaths will occur....? Same story with drugs of ANY sort (prescription or street).
A continued upswing in the trend of suicide - consider the source (the fashion and glamour of suicide).
I could list a lot of facts at this point but it would be a waste of words and time.
How much do you want to talk about the symptoms and not the root of the matter?
--------------

Let me give you an example...
It's been said there is a "gap" between the generations, but it's far worse than that - the communication between generations is broken beginning at the generation level itself.

I recently came across a woman whose son just graduated from high school. She says he can't write in cursive because (at the time) the school stopped teaching cursive. Hence he's a product of the system.
Odd....he's a victim of his parents. My mom taught me to both read and write BEFORE I officially entered school. My reading and writing tested out at a 7th grade level when I was in the first grade.
I'm no genius - BUT, I AM a testament of what the AVERAGE human is capable of achieving once it is firmly held to the standard, however, this must be dealt with during the formative years.
The value of NOT pressing your child is not a value at all and people need to sort out the guilt of their own personal "sin(s)" in order to maintain academic pressure so the kid can be properly skilled at a level he or she is capable of accomplishing.
Tears are no excuse for failure.
(Now, hold on)
Did the system fail this young man or did his parents? It seems as though he could already print - it's not as if he didn't know the alphabet....how hard would it have been to teach him to write in cursive?
(Hold on) - but no....Life for these parents went on in nonchalant, blissful ignorance. When are you going to understand that YOU are FULLY responsible for educating your child(ren).?
(Ready?)
....You (meaning anyone/everyone) live life as if your faults don't need to be pointed out for fear of hurting your 'feelings'. Further, as if you don't need to actually do something about them.... But, we now live in a society where-by calling out the exact problem is deemed as a criminal act because it offends you.....?
Your goddamm feelings aren't the only value by which you are measured as a worthwhile human. What are your life-skills?
As an older generation of people go, we no longer correct mistakes or solve problems, but (instead), live with and tolerate the stunted horse$hit results with grand tyrannical silence.
You're dumb and blind....
There are only 2 genders - remember them good ole days? Seems there was a boy for a girl and a girl for a boy and people were happier and more connected....
But, someone wanted to "legally" increase the base definition of what gender is. So what do you think the result of that is? Seems like you're NOT finding your proper mate....and time has a way of marching on - it will leave you behind wether you're paired up or not. And now you're isolated. Life sucks and you're depressed.
If you want one moment of happiness, then, grow up and face what it is to live single because a natural meaning can, at least, be found in that - which is far better than the supposed 'options' have to offer. Otherwise, who cares what you like or don't like.
What? Don't like that? Then work more hours and dole the money to your weekly psycheatric sessions. Or medicate yourself or kill yourself....(does this sound like the common themes, now?)
Also, we all have a spiritual nature which is very real - betray or neglect that nature and see what you get.
To believe in God and entertain thoughts of a spiritual nature does not necessarily entail "religion."
The same $2 dollar professor who taught you that life is all about you seems to have also taught that religion is a poison and therefore your belief/faith in God is a toxic thing that must be lobodomized from you.
You don't like the symptoms of your circumstance....but you still insist avoiding the issues of life where-by things are made better.
If you can't fall in line naturally, then do what you are told, otherwise, the wheel keeps turning and it gives no thought to grinding you up where the gears meet.

@BA1 I’m going to have to unpack that reply later today, it’s a really long one.

@PepperJ any thoughts?

PS I didn’t realize this article might be controversial

@Araz Lots of thoughts. Long ones, so I will need to reply later when I can thing through it more

But here is one scenario (although this in no way encompasses all of my thoughts about this. I think we have a society that is failing and as a Christian, I think it's prophetic). <--Having said that, I'll leave this one scenario for now:

1990's: Me in my 20's.
I worked FT as a server (UNSKILLED)
Sometimes I picked up odd jobs
Once out of college, I worked 3 jobs...but bought 2 houses
My 2 houses were 3bed/2bath for around $150k each
Made around $15/hour
Paid my rent for a 2 bedroom apartment in a good part of town
Rent was $230/mo
Bought a car. New. Cheapest on the lot, but new
Car payment was $140/mo
Insured said car for $100/mo
Furnished my 2 bed apartment rather nicely. Some second hand/some new
Had 2 TVs
Had a pantry and a fridge full of food
Took little vacations/excursions on my days off (extra money for "fun")
Went out to eat a couple times a week
Went "out" periodically
Had a closet with nice clothes. Some thrift store/some new
Paid for my own college. NO LOANS
Paid for my own medication, out of pocket. NO INSURANCE
Was hospitalized without insurance. Paid the bill off in 3-4 years

2020 young adult in their 20's (not me, an example of many young adults I see today)
Works TWO jobs. One is SEMI SKILLED (ie: need certificate or AA)
Picks up side hustles
May have done college or trade school. Can't afford college, mostly
Feels pretty lucky to make $15/hour
Pays rent, with no hope of owning
Rent is $600 for a BEDROOM in a BASEMENT
Or rent for a house/condo is $2,000 for a 3 bed/2 bath
Buying a 3 bed/2 bath would be $350k or more
Cheapest new car on the lot will set you back more than $300/mo
Insurance is higher (just to insure my son, our insurance went up almost $200/month, and that is with him on "our" policy, so I know that a young person's insurance would be way more than my $100/month)
Putting a bed in your home now will set you back a grand.
Forget a kitchen table and a sofa. No dresser, either, unless it's plastic
Now people have multiple screens in their homes
I'm shocked at how "food poor" so many people are
People take some excursions. Not weekly, but maybe skiing from time to time
Going out to eat happens more often for today's youth
Going "out" happens more often, but it's more frugal things: biking, etc.
Thrift stores are still doing a booming business; secondhand among youth has grown to 3x what it was with my age group, much of it online
Can't work and afford college with no loans
If hospitalized without insurance, you will never get out of that debt

So....yes, 20 somethings today go out to eat more often. They go out and ride bikes, travel to towns, maybe ski or do some mild "vaca" excursions more often. They carpool far more often, because many don't have a car. It just seems like inflation is far too high for wages that have remained stagnant for the youth of today to be able to have a positive outlook.

Now, I'm saying that with a caveat, because there are plenty of youth who have an entrepreneurial spirit and who are making tons of money. Youth who are deciding against home ownership and instead choosing to enjoy the flexibility and freedom of renting. Many are foregoing marriage and families. I don't think it's because they don't want these things. I think it's because they are making the best out of a situation.

Another caveat: It's not all about money. Degradation in society is a thing. Our country is so divided and so chaotic that life may become perilous at some point. The world is chaotic and divided and often perilous. Children are being kidnapped at an alarming rate.

I think affairs are more likely now. They are more forgiven, society wide, anyway. I think relationships are more "throw away" and more "short term." This isn't 100% but just the small percentage makes it catastrophic to society. People aren't meant to be "thrown away." People aren't "short term."

People are more connected...but less connected with their screens. One thing I do notice is that my kids are on their phones all day and we bemoan that and everyone says, "Oh, the screens...." HOWEVER, my kids are ALSO pro active in setting up meetings with other people and getting out and doing things than most people think. They ARE having the face to face time. I think that the pendulum is starting to swing a bit toward more personal relationships....or maybe more of a balance.

I somewhat agree with pepper.

Personally I have zero hope of owning my own home. The average combined income you need is £64k, jobs without a degree are 20k or less. Wages are stagnating, houses are inflating.

I dont want to marry, mostly because i have never found anyone and im getting old now. I have been very depressed because of my living situation as im sure you all know.

Social media is a big player in depression, and i think youtube contributes to doing incredibly stupid dangerous stuff.

I think doctors over prescribe too, especially in the US, no wonder there is a massive opioid epidemic, it all starts with the docs

And then, theres brexit........
