Who here has ever had welders arc?
Any advice?
Not sure what you mean? Do you mean using an arc welder? I've done it and have some experience repairing fences and whatnot with a welder, but maybe I'm not understanding - And maybe that goes to show I'm not qualified to answer the question. ๐
Regardless- a little more background as to what exactly you need and what's going on would help us to help you. ๐
Sorry:
Photokeratitis or ultraviolet keratitis is a painful eye condition caused by exposure of insufficiently protected eyes to the ultraviolet (UV) rays from either natural (e.g. intense sunlight) or artificial (e.g. the electric arc during welding) sources. Photokeratitis is akin to a sunburn of the cornea and conjunctiva, and is not usually noticed until several hours after exposure. Symptoms include increased tears and a feeling of pain, likened to having sand in the eyes.
Ah. Got it. Never had it myself- knew a guy it happened to.
I don't know how to treat it, but I know he spent a lot of time rinsing his eyes with water.
Hope everything is okay!
Shouted you. Now Inhave heard it all.

i've only had flash burn once. woke up 2 am and nothing soothes the pain. i went later to the eye doc, for unrelated reasons, and he told me that alcohol was the answer to the pain as the first thing to numb for drinking alcohol was the retina. havent had to try it yet, but thats what he told me.
Had this. Not much to do about it. Can get drops that numbs the eye so that one can see, but other than that its just a waiting game for it to heal up.
Best advice is probably to go lay down and not try to stress the eye further until it has healed sufficiently.

Hubby has it bad :( Heโs asleep at home right now - Iโm working. Water made it worse but we do have the ointment and the narcotics.

Thank you! I have to look into that - maybe once heโs off the narcotics if heโs still in pain. I could sure use a drink myself right about now, though.

They put drops in his eyes at the ER and the opthomologist but didnโt give us any to take home. Only 10 pills and an antibiotic topical gel :( heโs in bed now - the tricky thing will be getting him to stay there and not try to go back to work.
Iโm definitely against any welding, now, though :/
Was he not wearing proper eye protection? I've never heard of that happening with somebody that had a decent welding helmet.

No, he was not wearing proper eye protection bc he was being dumb ๐ก but heโs suffering now so Iโm not saying anything, just taking care of him. I feel like thatโs punishment enough.

Good choice. No sense in making it worse than it already is.
That said- feel no shame in reminding him in the future if he's going to be welding again. Not wearing eye protection while welding is pretty dumb- no offense to the hubby. ๐
Inviting a friend. @Silverset hoping you can shed light on this topic.
Sorry Araz. Pun not intended.

If you get drops to take home, you can carry on as normal basically, which can further damage the eye and prolong healing.
There is no need for anything but time.
Its not nice for sure, and hopefully a valuable lesson.
Yeah pain pills allow you to keep working... and that's really not a good thing. I know all about that at my age. You take a pill and you feel like superman and work like you did 20 years ago, then the next day you feel like a train ran over you so you take another pill. Pretty soon you can't get out of bed without a pill and you have damaged your body beyond repair. Stay in bed as long as you can is my advice. The pain is your body's way of telling you to stop doing whatever it is you are doing.
And who the heck arc welds without one of those helmets on? It hurts my eyes just thinking about it. Lesson learned.

It was dumb and if heโs never welding again! I canโt tell you how many times heโs caught himself on fire ๐ช my husband is a bit reckless sometimes.

Theyโre giving me dilating eye drops which they say will help with the light sensitivity, so we will see. Hopefully he wonโt be in too much pain for much longer ๐

My husband is the real life Thor. Heโs a big guy, strong, and thinks he is invincible. He thought he was the exception to the rule about welding with a mask on, I think. He tried to tell me he was coming back to this work site tomorrow and is put off I wonโt let him. Heโs on Percocet and in pain and he canโt sit still!
He will for sure stop taking the pain medication before he should stop. Itโs in his nature. We are total opposites, Iโm a big baby when Iโm sick or hurt.
I was Thor too until I was about 45... now I wish I had taken it a lot easier on myself. You pay later in life for the stupid things you do as a child. My dad told me that when I was 15 and wrecking motorcycles and generally trying to kill myself. I didn't listen, I doubt if your husband will either.

He wonโt - Andy is the most stubborn man alive. I love his sense of adventure and work ethic, I hate his recklessness and (at times) inflexibility.
Question Sophie. Why isn't Thor here? We need and want you both. No lie.

People should not shy away from pain. Its our best teacher.

Soco - Youโre asking me, right? Andy is not really one for online forums. He is more hands-on and doesnโt like to be in front of a screen for too long. Do you know what he got me for my birthday? He literally built me a solid wooden desk. If someone called him and asked for advice, he would be more than willing to talk to them forever. If someone texted him for advice or sent him something electronically, they probably wouldnโt get a response.

It is but I will always shy away from it personally.
I thought he was on OH. I do remember a Thor here before. It was not him?

Oh, okay. Brain fart I guess.
I hope Silverset comes on soon. Wishing you and Thor all the best and he'll be in my prayers tonight.

So even though the doctor put in the prescription for his dialating drops, the pharmacy was out and didnโt order them ๐ก now I have to call several kaiser pharmacies in the morning to see if any of them have it on stock. I feel like this is the only place I can really complain, I canโt be negative around Andy so here it goes...
I got a total of 2 hrs of sleep and have been running around doing my job and Andyโs job all day. My whole body is sore. I was at the ER from 2AM to 4:30 AM and then the doctor from 8AM to 9AM. After I dropped Andy off at home I started working. I worked from 10AM to midnight: the day before that I worked from 9AM to 1AM.
My whole body hurts and my mind is just not functioning properly right now. I have to get up at 4 AM to give Andy meds and then leave at 8AM to go do more construction work. Itโs 12:30 AM right now.
How do I stay positive and not get overwhelmed? How do I stay sharp when I feel so exhausted in every way? I need to be strong for Andy but itโs hard. Any advice? Other than suck it up, buttercup because thatโs what Iโm doing right now.
Sucking it up is the best advice I would give. ๐
Just focus on the good thatโs to come and thatโs coming of your work. Focus on something positive and drive ahead!
Suck it up is about where it's at right now. And it's not called welder's arc. Arc welding is a form of welding using electricity and the metal is melted together with the electric arc. I thought maybe it was a colloquialism and maybe it is but Wiki has a bunch of names for it.. you should call it one of these. "Photokeratitis is known by a number of different terms including: snow blindness, arc eye, welder's flash, bake eyes, corneal flash burns, sand man's eye, flash burns, niphablepsia, potato eye, or keratoconjunctivitis photoelectrica."
Arc eye fits but potato eye is kind of more fun. Bake eyes would have been my choice in younger years, ha ha. Now that I'm a self appointed Docteur keratoconjuctivitis photoelectrica suits me just fine.

Priorities: God. Family. Employer/job. In that order. Some people put employer ahead of everything else. Don't.
Simple as that.

I should add, Family includes you. If you don't take care of you, everything below that will not matter anyhow. If rest is what you need than take it. No apologies.

Yup so everyoneโs advice is the advice Iโve been giving myself: suck it up. Well, at least I got to vent somewhere! Itโs too selfish of me to vent anywhere else.

Andy is part owner of a construction company. Weโre both small business owners - unfortunately that means although we are our own bosses, if we donโt work, we donโt get paid. And itโs the end of the month - rent and health insurance are due now.
So I will try to rest later on tonight hopefully. :( Thank God for family - Andyโs brother Brandon stayed the night and his other brother is helping me at the work site. My parents are coming over tonight with dinner so I donโt have to worry about cooking.
Araz wrote:
Oh and the only reason I said welders arc is because everyone else - Andy, the doctor, Andyโs business partner - were using the term!
I'm calling it a colloquialism then. I still think if you start calling him potato eye he will start using the eye protection/welder's mask. I'm self employed too, and it's great you only have to work half a day... there are 24 hours in a day work whichever 12 you want. Keep him in bed Araz, and take care of yourself.

I will call him potato eyes lol. Thanks, Iโll try!

Maybe you should stop the bleeding in your foot and hand before you start cooking. Just a thought. Yeah my son works for me too and one of us bleeds every day. We always laugh and say if somebody's not bleeding we're not really working. The joys of construction...

I haven't started studying welding yet. I spoke to a teacher briefly on an open day in a college and said you shouldn't get arch eye if you use correct eye protection. Thats all I know. I found this video though on youtube.
