Everyone is extremely grateful for this 'resurrection' as it were.

Youโ€™re all very kind. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Iโ€™ll see what I can do to get a donate button added soon! Iโ€™ve been more pre occupied with more important features and making the site a more pleasant experience (like fixing that silly link preview) but a donate button should be pretty quick and easy. Iโ€™ll toss it up tonight after work!

Thank you everyone. ๐Ÿ™

Not sure if anyone is interested but the original Help started in 1999.

I joined around 06/07, I believe. Hard to remember. Help got me through so many things, and honestly- the biggest help was the community here just being friendly and accepting, more than just answering my posts when I needed help. The friends and memories I made here will stick with me forever. :)

Although I've never met anybody from Help in real life (Except 1, but I knew her in person before she joined so it doesn't count) I still consider them true friends of mine who I owe my life to. Those are the ones that got me motivated to take this project on.

I plan to keep this up as long as possible, but it's a community driven site. The old Help was around for nearly 10 years before many of us found it (Except Ralph. He's been around since forever, apparently)- which just goes to show that it may take some time before there is a constant stream of users that are finding us and posting.

To keep the site alive, the best thing we can all do is stick around as long as we can and help each and every person that comes to our doorstep. If we can maintain that great community, Help will survive.

What do you honestly think would happen if the help community actually met in person?

Weโ€™d all sit quietly. And awkwardly try to socialize with each other.
Iโ€™m pretty sure at least 85% of us is socially inept to some degree. ๐Ÿ˜„

For those of you who were on the original help site,

To be fair, finding a 2 legged dog should be relatively easy.

Does anyone here understand how to calculate interest?

This is called compound interest.
The formula is this:

A = P(1 + (r/n))^nt

A = final amount
P = initial principal balance
r = interest rate
n = number of times interest applied per time period
t = number of time periods elapsed

So, with your numbers:

A = ???
P = 10,000 -- initial loan
r = 0.1 -- 10% = 10/100 = 1/10 = 0.1
n = 1 -- Assuming interest compounds yearly
t = 5 -- Number of years

A = 10000 * (1 + 0.1/1)^(1*5)
A = 10000 * 1.1^5
A = 10000 * 1.61051
A = 16105.1

So you'd end up paying $16,105.10 at the end of your 5 year period.

There are many online calculators that will help you out with these, but yes- this is standard. Compound interest is used across investments, loans, and general banking, as well as many other things. It's less of a "common formula" and more just how things work.

Of course, many of them compound monthly, but in order to keep things simple they tell you the yearly interest. To get the monthly interest, just divide the yearly interest by 12 and then multiply either the period or number of compounds by 12. You can see the numbers get a lot harder to work with, but you'll end up with the same results in most situations, assuming you're not paying it down over time. Some institutions might charge interest on the full amount and other loans might be based on the amount still owed. Usually it's the former, but credit card debt is based on the current amount rather than the total.

How can I post a picture in a message/post?

HQA doesn't host/store images, so if you want to include an image in a message or post, assuming it's hosted elsewhere, you just drop in the url!

The above is just this:

is this place still alive?

I'm a lurker. :) I see most things that happen here, but for the most part I'm just a fly on the wall.

How do you make friends as an adult?

My brother bought some racquet ball equipment and regularly posts on social media that he's got a gym membership with a guest, so he can bring other people. He just leaves an open invite and talks to people about it and now and then he gets people to come.

Hobbies. That's basically the only way. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Find a hobby, even if it's as simple as walking. There are lots of online meetup type sites and apps where you can find others that enjoy the hobby as well. Find groups that talk about or do the hobby collectively. Join those groups, and be open. Talk to people and be friendly. Friends will come.
