Everyone is extremely grateful for this 'resurrection' as it were.

Rockster160 is our Rock Star. Help is back and for the most part, we have all been reunited. From here on out it is up to us to make sure this lasts for as long as it is humanly possible.
To that end I would like to ask a favor of a few of you. The current domain name, help-qa*.*com is being hosted by a company in Panama for 1 year; until October '18. I propose that we, the registered users, purchase another 9 years of hosting of this site by the same company. Ownership would still remain with Rocco. This would just be a way to show our support and let him know we have his back in this.
I have already researched it and was given a quote of $120.15 for the extra 9 years; a small price to pay I think. That price includes the ICANN fee and the identity protection fee from WhoisGuard.
If we divide that fee up by say 20 members it would be only $6.01 per person. 24 members? $5.01. 30 members? $4.01
So if you are willing to part with a small portion of your income to see this continue for the next decade, post your username in the replies.
Please, and Thank you

Youโ€™re all very kind. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Iโ€™ll see what I can do to get a donate button added soon! Iโ€™ve been more pre occupied with more important features and making the site a more pleasant experience (like fixing that silly link preview) but a donate button should be pretty quick and easy. Iโ€™ll toss it up tonight after work!

Thank you everyone. ๐Ÿ™

10 is the max they allow. Since it was just recently registered she would only quote the additional 9. In 2027 we (the community) can discuss the following 10 years. Cost will of course fluctuate mainly based on bandwidth usage at that point. Hopefully it is much larger.

Keep in mind- this is just the domain name.

Generally costs for the domain do not change much over time, and if/when they do itโ€™s because of the cost of the general economy of domains, not because the site is or isnโ€™t popular.

The name is locked to me, and wonโ€™t be released until the paid years are gone and I fail to renew it. (Unlikely, because they really spam you if something goes wrong.)

The benefit to paying in advance is that the rate is now locked so the prices wonโ€™t change. Even 10 years down the line though, nobody else can scoop the domain out from under us without us actually unlocking it and giving it to them.

The other benefit is if something were to happen to me. (Hit by a bus or something) nothing would cause the the domain to go away. (The server wouldnโ€™t be protected by that, unfortunately.)

As long as none of those happen to hit the server in Ohio, I think weโ€™re good. ๐Ÿ˜„

But luckily the domain is pretty safe, even from all of those!
If something did cause the domain itself to break, I think this site (or the internet in general) should be the least of the worries...

Yes, and I do not apologize for it either! Which is rather rare for me.

Seriously though, just a photo is costing me $150, when usual con prices are around the $60-$80 mark. I've saved for three months even before it was announced he was coming, but I go to at least two each year - it's just that someone actually worth spending that kind of money on rarely steps foot into my crappy city. Lol.

I agree with the sentiment but why buy 9 years in advance? What if help.com becomes available? Or more likely something like help.qa

Money might be better spent on modernizing the website? (while retaining the retro look of course)

I have a lot of domains including my personal site under my own name, which I will keep forever, but I still pay yearly because, well, why not

@_fourthings_ My motives for wanting to extend the rights to the domain name are twofold. First, we all recall when things started to fall apart just before CBS sold it. I wanted to prevent that from happening again. There were several hundreds of people from its inception that made the old site as good as it was. If everyone was paid, it would have amounted to a payroll in the millions. To make this truly altruistic we all agree to volunteer both of our time and our willingness to help complete strangers all over the world. That, in my mind, is huge.
Second, Rockstar160 did this rebuild entirely on his own. He was not asked. He was not paid. He just saw the same need as the original founders did for this site. He spent his own money and time learning how to put it back together. Asking for a small donation is just a way of thanking him for His altruism and seeing the need for this still, probably more so in this day and age. I don't think that need will ever end even long after all of our lives come to completion.
It also should be made clear, none of this money is going into Rockster's pocket. It is solely for the purpose to keep this going for as long as humanly possible.

No worries! And PayPal isn't good. They've been known to freeze funds and are all sorts of sketchy. I've had too many issues with them in the past. Stripe is relatively new, but they work excellently. Never heard of Sage though! There are so many options. ๐Ÿ˜„

Big thank you to those who donated! And like @soco said- all of the money goes back into the site. If you guys want to put it into pre-paying for the domain, then I'm happy to comply. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@_fourthings_ (Need to fix tagging usernames that have markdown in them) - I don't think .qa is an existing/supported TLD, at least right now. And if Help.com ever comes back available, it's doubtful it will be available for anything less than $10k.
As far as modernizing the site- that's all going to be on me. If you've got any specific features/requests, please send them my way. ๐Ÿ˜„ I think if there is ever any site-changing feature requested, I'll do a poll on whether or not to implement it. Or we can do the same for choosing which request comes next.

I actually believe that was intentional! They wanted all communication on Help to be public. I think this was to attempt to prevent bullying or any other negativity that's made possible when messages aren't seen by other people.
That said- we can always add it! Maybe private messages would only be possible if you're friends with the user? That way you could easily prevent a user messaging you by removing them as a friend.

Well my initial guesstimate was high. I was hoping to get at least 20 people willing to help cover this cost. Only 12 usernames to date and there probably won't be many more.
To those that said they would contribute I thank you. This is a new start for all of us and there may still be some skeptics this can work. To be honest it is up to us. Rockster had a vision but without people and a willingness to contribute our responses it will fail. I, for one, am not willing to let that happen. And I will do everything in my power to keep this alive, hopefully long after I'm gone.

That sounds like a plan. I can definitely give more after Christmas.

How much are you short as of now?

I don't know to be honest. Nor do I think we want to get into well she only gave this but he gave that scenario.
If you can give $4.00, give that. Then we'll have $4.00 more than we did 10 minutes ago.

Well, don't talk about who gave what under any circumstance. Just about the goal and how close we are to that....

.qa is a Qatar regional domain which is available to the public.

I suppose my point is, as long as you own the domain nobody can take it away from you, so it's not needed to buy 9 years in advance. You can just let it automatically renew each year and the only way ownership could change hands is if the owner of help.qa gives it to someone else.

Heck. You can probably get domain help. ***xxx but would request aid with their history exam there?

The documentation you need to send to register a .qa? Same as any country really, as long as you're not government or military it's pretty straightforward, a small letter of your intent and proof of a registered business name if you intend to do business. If you do intend to do business you might need proof of some connection to the country in question, but that rarely happens

Sorry. My response was confusing.
What I meant to say would someone, anybody really, do a search for help.qa or help-qa.qa to find us at a foreign domain. No. They search for help and hopefully with luck and of course SEO we show up in the top 3 to 6 websites.

@_fourthings_ looks like you're correct! I did a very basic search for available domains and it didn't pop up. help.qa would be sweet, but like @soco said, we'd lose some SEO points.

As it is, our SEO set up is fairly decent. It should be getting picked up, we're mobile-optimized, and we comply to all or most of the industry standards. That said- the most important part of SEO is usage. Many things are taken in to account - how long a user spends on the site, how long a user spends on each page, how many different pages the user visits, repeat users (we've got that one nailed down pretty well. ๐Ÿ˜„), and, of course, how many users there are.

Because of how new we are, and how few users we have- we're not going to show up on any search engine list any time soon. That will change with time- SEO takes length of time the site as been up into account.

Help.com is the ideal domain because it's so easy and it's something people will tend to type in. Hopefully we can start to get picked up so that we can have an influx of traffic. ๐Ÿ˜„

Thank you both.
You can donate anonymously if you don't want anyone to know. I'm not positive if even Rockster can see the names of donors.

There's no rush at all. ๐Ÿ˜Š The domain is locked until next year at the earliest. Even after that, it's unlikely the price the will change.

Thank you all again for your kind donations. I'll do my best to not disappoint with the future of this site. ๐Ÿ˜„

okay.
Just to be sure though we are going to buy you a new suit to wear. It won't look too stylish but it might catch on. It will be made of multiple layers of bubble wrap and kevlar.

Just give what you can safely afford Dani, even if it's $5. We appreciate all willing donations.

Are we getting closer to our goal of $120? Today is Day #36, unless I have miscalculated.

Haven't had anything since the first wave. ๐Ÿ˜› We didn't quite hit it, but we're pretty close. I plan to do it once the season closes up regardless of amount donated though. Just gotta make it through all of the Christmas stuff first. ๐Ÿ˜‰
