Not sure if anyone is interested but the original Help started in 1999.

I think I found it about 2001. Maybe a little later than that, I didn't even have the internet until after 2000 and it didn't take me long to discover this little piece of heaven.

I found it when I was working on my master's degree and having serious marriage issues. If I remember, it came up in my search engine by total accident. I think that was in 2007. It was a total lifesaver for me and when things got okay in my life, I hung around and helped until the site left. Some of the friends I made on help are people who I met in real life, too and who are still friends today.

I think I found it when I was around 13/14 and suffering with the first of many bouts of depression.

It gave me a safe space filled with people who I could talk to without judgement. I actually met my current fiance on the site. I would never have been who I am without it!

I was one of the later arrivals about 2008. But lots of memories and friends were made during that short time before the shutdown. I've thought about this place constantly for almost a decade.

I think a lot of people joined similarly on the old site!! I loved being able to help people too, and the fact that it had such impact on so many of us that we remember it almost a decade later is incredible

It has made a big impact on lots of people's lives, even more so than we are aware of.

To that end @Rockster160 I ask my biggest request ever. Please make whatever plans you can to secure the future legacy for this place. It is very much still needed today as much as it was 10 years ago. It would be a terrible loss to have this die out as each one of us passes from this life to the next. And I hope that all of us would be willing to support that effort as well.

I joined around 06/07, I believe. Hard to remember. Help got me through so many things, and honestly- the biggest help was the community here just being friendly and accepting, more than just answering my posts when I needed help. The friends and memories I made here will stick with me forever. :)

Although I've never met anybody from Help in real life (Except 1, but I knew her in person before she joined so it doesn't count) I still consider them true friends of mine who I owe my life to. Those are the ones that got me motivated to take this project on.

I plan to keep this up as long as possible, but it's a community driven site. The old Help was around for nearly 10 years before many of us found it (Except Ralph. He's been around since forever, apparently)- which just goes to show that it may take some time before there is a constant stream of users that are finding us and posting.

To keep the site alive, the best thing we can all do is stick around as long as we can and help each and every person that comes to our doorstep. If we can maintain that great community, Help will survive.

Back in the day, this site was found by typing "help" into a search engine. While we can all invite and tell who we know (a great idea by the way ((even if they weren't on help before)) because we don't know until we do), but this site needs to broadcast and linked.
I am not at ALL saying to make it a pay site! However, you should add a donation option. A bit of funds will change how many people find our home.

I was actually going to ask about how it was being funded! Having a site myself, I definitely understand the costs that go into maintaining one (mine went dormant for about 5 years, and it's going to cost me another grand to build it up again), I was wondering about offering a donation to help out.

I'll add a donation button eventually. Probably stick it at the bottom of the FAQ or something. It's very low on my list of priorities at the moment though. :P

I think all in all, the site as of now will cost me about $1/day. Which can add up over time, but it's maintainable. That's all-inclusive: domain, hosting, assets, etc.

CBS stopped maintaining the site and left it "As is" for months upon end.

On that note, CBS gave out Mod privileges based on not giving a ****shit about the site. Just handed them out to the people most likely to be on. Simple maths really. I think mods should be voted on merit. The most helpful, considerate. . someone that gives a crap but can toe the line when needed.

Agreed! So far we've got 3 mods that I personally trust- either because I saw how they handled things on the last site or I've spoken to them personally and think they'd do a good job.

The mod team doesn't need to be big right now (I mean, 10% of our current users are mods, so I think that's probably plenty) but as it expands, I think voting on users based off of how well they'll handle the role is important.

I know Dani basically ran the old site. She may run with an iron fist, but she does a good job. 🙂
