This seems like a question best resolved with a dictionary.

In any case the obvious difference is the pre-fix, "re."

Both words have more than one definition so the exact difference in meaning varies according to context.

In general a reaction is a type of behavior that is a consequence or result of a specific action.

Both personal or authoritative versions are welcome.

I thought about and decided I don't really have much else to say, hopefully someone else can show a bit more creativity here.

What something means to me and my perception of it are different issues.

I suppose I should say; Authoritative versions and personal nartitives are welcome.

And yes, it is rather open-ended.

To me: an action is doing something - physical or verbal. Putting a plan in motion.

A reaction is a response to someone taking an action.

I like this.

At this point, I'm trying to determine if a reaction is a good thing.

For most of my life, my experiences with 'reactions' seem to be more knee jerk responses rather than anything thought out or carefully constructed.
Reactions, to me, seem to be more instinctual or primal at its root.

Mind you, I'm not necessarily talking about something like your hand on a hotplate reaction but more of a way of being. A type of mentality, I guess.

On the left is a 2 liter bottle of Coca-Cola. On the right you have 2 Mentos mints. Separately they have zero action. They just sit there and are very happy in their normal state. Mix the two however and you will have a big reaction.

And a huge mess for your Mom to clean up, and who by the way, will have her own reaction!!

For what it's worth, government should be reactionary 100% of the time. When we are attacked, we should attack back [9/11]. When we are nearing a pandemic, we should take measures to mitigate it's impact and spread [not cut funding to those measures 2 years prior.] When we have too many school shootings we should pass needed gun laws and restrictions, not run to hide behind the coat tails of Charlton Heston with an AK-47 raised in the air.

Now then... There will be some that will disagree with my statements. THEY will have a reaction. Got it?!

BUT....if someone agrees with your statement is it still considered a reaction?

Gun laws only impede law abiding citizens, not the lawless.

BTW, I think your example of chemical reaction between Coke and Mentor is spot on.

I would think so too.

Emm....no...

Action: Thinking you could punch me in the face.

Reaction: Believing you're faster than flying lead.
