Kratom has no redeeming or medical value; not in its current strength and form. The countries and places it is manufactured are severely unregulated. They could mix anything in their pills and you would never know.

Now the drugs that are made in legit pharmaceutical companies can be made safe and helpful. They just charge way too much for for what is in it and they are not truthful to the doctors they ask to sell it. Pure greed. Nothing more.

To answer your initial question though aeolian, I think the vast majority of Americans are not affected by it so the outcry you seek for change doesn't exist. If there is a automobile, say, that causes 99% of all traffic accidents we would be begging the authorities to eradicate it from our cities and streets. Conversely if someone wants to chew and swallow a Tide pod, we really for the most part dont give a fruitcake.

Are you upset because these regulatory agencies are controlling "feel good" substances or because there are countless people suffering without these substances...?
Honestly, I outgrew the hypocracy decades ago. When I smoked weed it pissed me off that it was illegal - who were these posh elites to control what I chose to make me feel good while they have all the money in the world and can have any thing they want at any time - no problem.
I don't masquerade or promenade around medicinal or health issues- usually, if it feels good, it ain't good for you - my attitude, who flipping cares, it's the choice of the individual, and no one has a right to regulate it.
Meanwhile, the regulatory agencies have their own hypocratic doctrine. Sign up for war, but no drinking until you're 21 and other things like that.

But, if you happen to enjoy it in some unusual way, someone will make an issue of it and it won't be long until it is surrounded by politics. People don't get it - for years I've heard "pot should be made legal." Only ignorant people think that way. The fact is, weed should be made a nonissue with no legalism involved one way or the other.

The drug market needs to become competitive and for the people, you shouldn't be able to patent a drug. And there should be limits on the profitability. Obviously this would need to cover r and d costs. But hiking drug prices like valeant did should be illegal.
