I think he made $20

Just his expenditures....$60+$80=$140
His profits....$70+$90=$160

Profits minus expenditures is a profit of $20

Buy for $60.
Sell for $70
..gain +$10

$70 isn't enough to rebuy the same thing at $80.
You need an ADDITIONAL $10.
(A loan of $10)

Resell at $90, you recover the $70, repay your loan of $10, and have only $10 to show for your overall efforts.

IN THE END, HOW MUCH?
(The first $10 profit doesn't count in the beginning when it becomes the investing norm of the second purchase.)

IN THE END you make $10.
I'm happy with my incorrect answer.

90 minus 60 equals 30, not 20.

@Yorick almost has it figured out. @PepperJ got it right.

90 minus 60 equals 30, but it cost you 10 to get to the 90. 30 minus 10 equals 20 total profit.

Change the second transaction to any other animal and you'll see what I mean.
