I have to find a place for a meeting in just over a week!

People are counting on me. Libraries are booked already, and I don't know where else to look. We can't pay for it, so room rental is not an option. Any ideas?

Can you do it at someone's house?

Maybe, but it's usually 15-20 people. That's a big crowd for a house. If weather is nice, a park might be an option, but I can't guarantee the weather.

The hour this needs to take place? Will attendees expect to be paid?

I would ask another business near you if they might have a board room you could use in exchange for... and name something you have to offer as part of the barter.

No PA needed, people just move closer to the speaker if they can't hear. No payments of any kind. It's an organization for political action and community service. We talk about and plan projects. When we've had meetings in restaurants before, some people have bought drinks, but I'm trying to keep it family friendly so a place where kids can go play in a corner if they are tired of sitting is better. It's usually about 90 minutes.

If You want someplace that is free you are better off asking [e.g. begging] somebody that has such a location.
Good luck.

You will be at the mercy of the weather, but how about a local park? Some even have pavilions with seating for such an impromptu event.

See about using a meeting room in a school or community college.

If you have a community college or university nearby, you can usually find a quiet spot in the library.

At least one group member is atheist, but he said he's ok with meeting in a church as long as they don't try to convert him. It's a diverse group, but I've only discussed religion with a few of them. It's not something I tend to bring up in casual conversation.

I've exchanged emails with a representative of a local church but not heard a decision yet.
