Unless there are details from the story that are missing...

Let's go through this for a minute -

The very fact that he has a place to rent has him needing people and there are limits in both situations.

He told you that he had 2 people looking at it. If it weren't true, he'd be counting on you - he has something that he needs to do with - it HAS to be rented and you're as good of a candidate as any (right?)

So he rents to them because they came closest to his expectation = max$ rent (get me?)

Meanwhile, he's true to his word with you. He told you that if they DIDN'T take the room he would get a hold of you.... Well, he didn't get back with you because they started to rent the room.

In the meantime, 16 days pass by but what you don't see is all the $#!t that went down between your first and second call - bad renters, scammers, con artists, felons - who knows but, now he needs to get them out.

And triggered a pre-existing condition that sent him to the hospital.

I'm not standing up for the guy in real life, but just making a possible conclusion strictly based upon the information you provided.

....What are we missing?
