An interesting perspective on the whole "transgender" thing.

While I totally agree with the underlying message- I think she portrays it very harshly.

Yes, it's a psychological disorder just like PTSD, bipolar, and many others. Yes, I think it should be "treated" not "accepted". Yes, I think it's silly to entertain and say it's okay to claim you're a different ***sex just because you feel like it.
I would not go so far as to say it's abuse though. Is telling children Santa brings them presents on Christmas abuse? No. It's a silly fantasy, yes. But not abuse. (Opinion)

I actually had a conversation the other day about this and an interesting point was brought up to me. GENDER is your social/cultural placement of male and female. Gender does NOT refer to your biological ***sex. (Gender is also binary, just like ***sex.)

So, the term transgender is actually valid/correct. You CAN be transgender based on your feelings.

<rant>
However, that applies only to your gender. Not your ***sex. When you're filling out patient forms- you are to enter your biological ***sex. Bathrooms are based on biological ***sex. Any time somebody asks you or the question comes up, it's important to answer based on your biological ***sex, not your current mood as to what gender you feel like being.

About as close to the short-and-sweet as I could hit it.

I know that there are true transgender people, who are born with hermaphroditic anatomies. And there MAY be some neurological differences between people that incline them toward certain "gender behaviors."

But I honestly think that there is an epidemic of people who "self-identify" as a member of the opposite s*e*x simply because they envy people of that s*e*x.

An example: when I was in the Army, we had a young female soldier who started crying one day. She was a young Caucasian woman. When we asked what was wrong, she said, "I wasn't born black!" She admired everything about black culture: the music, the mannerisms, the dialects. And she was actually crying because she was not born black.

A couple of years ago, a white woman "self-identified" as a black woman and headed up a local chapter of the NAACP. She was kicked out after her "whiteness" was discovered. (I don't really know why a white person could not serve in a leadership position of the NAACP--sounds somewhat racist to me.)

Some of the fall-out from all of this "self-identifying" includes girls going into boys' locker rooms and vice versa. And MEN who "self-identify" as women are edging out real women in competitive female sports.

I believe that the psychology community is doing people a grave disservice by not being forthright with the vast majority of these "self-identifying" people, who should be told that "it's in their head" rather than an issue that would involve hormones and surgery.

If I told my psychologist, "I self-identify as a zebra," I'm sure I would be referred to a therapist rather than getting gene transplants and major surgery!

Its strange because I can't figure out if people were always thinking that way and not getting help (back in the 1990's and before), or if society is more accepting so people are more willing to 'come out'.

I think a lot of young people are more like brands now. It's the current way to market yourself, you have to be different to get famous. I don't believe in all of these different ***sex orientations, its just confusing. Be straight or gay, simples.

I think it's a fad. I don't believe all these people are men trapped in women's bodies or vice versa. I think they think it's cool..
