The legend of the sack man.

When I was a small boy, one of my grandfather's friend would tell me about the local "bogey folk." One of them was Soap Sally--all I can remember about her was that she would scrub dirty children with soap. But the really nightmarish figure I was told about was the Sack Man.

The Sack Man was always on the prowl looking for wayward children. He had a long, steel fishing pole, and he would cast a hook with it to snag the clothing of children, whom he would then reel in. Once he was in their clutches, they went into the sack he carried slung over his shoulder. I wasn't sure what happened to the children then, but they were never seen again. The one defense a wayward child had was to hide under the kitchen table if he came into the house. For some reason, despite all of his wiles, the Sack Man never thought to look under a kitchen table.

One day, when I was about 4 1/2 years old, I saw--you guessed it--the Sack Man coming up the road. He was a big black fellow, probably over six feet tall, very stout--and he had the sack slung over his shoulder, and he had the steel pole, which was glinting in the sunlight. I hoped he would veer off, but he was making an unerring beeline for our front door--screen door of which I had been looking through.

As he got closer, I remembered the advice I had received, and got under the table. Sure enough the Sack Man came to the door and knocked. My mother answered the door. He said, "Ma'am, if you could spare a drink o' water, I'd surely appreciate it." My mom got him a glass of water, which he drank and was most thankful for. Then he tipped his cap and went on his way.

Of course he really wasn't the Sack Man. He was a black gentleman who went frog gigging in those parts. The sack contained not children but frogs. His fishing pole was steel, which afforded a very snappy action, and was great for snagging frogs.

The legend of the Sack Man is a worldwide phenomenon. You can read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sack_Man

Parents don't tell their children about the Sack Man any more. But I think that if they did, and there were some frog giggers making their rounds today as in the past, children would be a lot better behaved.

After all, not even the meanest, most mischievous tot out there wants to end up in a sack!

Hide under the kitchen table..... except I don't have a kitchen table, will the dining table do?

Generally I hide from anyone knocking on the door, I only ever get gypsy's or mormons knocking:/

I think certain bedtime stories for children have made their way around the world, surviving through successive generations.
It helps keep the kids in line - and when it works...you can't help but tell your own.
Some stories are part-in-parcel, racially slanted to maintain a view (be it of blacks or natives or otherwise). In stories where this is not always the case, monsters and goblins become the icon.
Here's the legendary creature that made Satan $#!t his pants -
