I booked a flight to Denpasar Bali and its the first time I'll be flying on my own.

I'm from the UK and quite nervous. Meeting my brother there.
I guess I need the obvious like passport, plane ticket. Not sure where is the best place to get the money I need for there. I will be travelling on the 6th. I couldnt find an adapter online for a decent price. What else would I need? Do I need to see a doctor before I go?
I do get worried Ill mess up at the stopover.

Don't carry a surfboard bag...that's my best advice.

As for money exchange, there should be a place near customs where you can change over currency, and I would definitely see a doc and find out what vaccinations you might need to be up-to-date on, and what you may need to be protected against while abroad.

And just in case you weren't aware, don't bring ANY leftover food from the plane off the plane - that's a big no-no due to possible contamination. Even if it's fresh fruit you didn't eat.

Plus its quite common that surfers are partial to drugs. Any way, Im sure you would need malaria tablets at least, not sure about any other shots. Apply for the passport fast, I think the price is going up and its usually in april.

From Tripadvisor.com:

You can buy IDR quite easily in the UK, but you'll get a lower exchange rate than if you take GBP to Bali and exchange there.

So the best option is to take GBP and exchange when you're in Bali. The airport money changers (after the customs and x-ray check) offer a rate that's slightly lower than in your destination (if you're in south Bali) but still better than UK rates. So maybe exchange about 50 quid at the airport to get you going then exchange the rest when you're in your destination.

It's worth taking debit/credit card as a back up, but remember to register your travel dates and countries with your lender so that the card isn't blocked for a fraud check should you need to use it.

Using a credit/debit card isn't as cost effective generally compared to taking cash; you will get stung for a transaction fee and foreign exchange fee. There is a way around this if you use a Halifax Clarity Credit Card to make the withdrawal then the same day go into your online banking and pay off the amount withdrawn to avoid the daily interest charge of a credit card cash advance.

Store your cash in your in-room safe or the reception safety deposit box depending on your property.

Travel cards are generally okay in Europe and the US; but for use outside of these destinations generally not cost effective.

Enjoy your trip. Post lots of pictures so we can wish we were there too. Safe travels both ways. Seek responsible counsel from your brother; he lives there. Take the high road in all circumstances and stay positive.

You got this...!

When we travel we've learned things come you pretty quick, but remembering food and water can cause some illness so don't eat anything from an outside buffet (we saw birds poop in salad bars) and protect your Chia:)

You are going into an area where malaria is present. I suggest getting a prescription for Malarone before you go. Start taking the pills two days before you leave, and for a week after you get back. Malarone does not have the horrible side effects of doxycycline.

While you are there:

1. NEVER put ice cubes in your drinks.
2. Stay away from shellfish and sushi.
3. NEVER eat food purchased from street vendors.
4. Drink ONLY bottled water--and use it even for brushing your teeth!
5. Eat only at establishments that cater to Westerners. Eating elsewhere can get you a bellyful of parasites.
6. Get some antibiotics prescribed for stomach infections and for diarrhea.
7. You can most likely use your debit or credit card--IF you give advance notice to your bank. But use it only at large banks. Never pay for food or other things with your debit card--hackers can clean out your bank account. You have protections when using a credit card.
8. Don't flash cash or wear expensive jewelry.
9. Maintain high situational awareness. Westerners have been targeted in Bali by Islamic extremists.
10.Don't get into a taxi alone after dark!

Here's a site for some medical advice: https://www.tmb.ie/destinations/vaccinations-fo...

Good luck--and enjoy yourself!
