Are you allowed to take him out to relieve himself? I would recommend that.

So the dog usually is well behaved but it peed and pooped in the house?
๐Ÿค” I mean it could be stress with the family gone. Or it could just not hold it though the night. My dog Vega goes in the crate at night and there are never any accidents but when shes left out sometimes she goes.

I just finished dogsitting 3 dogs- a puppy, 8 year old, and 12 year old for 10 days. I have lots of experience with dogs but Iโ€™m exhausted. The dog may act out bc of the change in ownership. Destroying stuff is a sign of bordum. Give the dog a toy that they are allowed to chew on to teach them. since heโ€™s 7 he shouldnโ€™t be acting that way. Hopefully since itโ€™s day one it will pass soon

seems much clamer today.. after leaving me 2 big piles of crap. one in the am and one when i returned.

made a big mistake the other night rewarding him a good ol treat for good behavior.. wasnt aware this was a big dog treat.. .. those fake chewy bone treats. that night he ate the whole damn thing under 10 minutes

lesson learned

I talk to my dogs about as much as I talk to anyone these days. They never talk back but that's not a problem. Yeah this dog is playing you, pooping on you and tearing your stuff up. I guess we figured out who the alpha male really is in the house.

Ohh sorry I am late for the invite :(

Ok first of all I want to dispel the 'alpha dog' myth. It is simply not true, dogs do not dominate or compete for position.

The dog is peeing/pooing in the house because this is a new environment for it, it is likely stressed/nervous/anxious about a completely new person in a completely new house.

Along with the destructive chewing I would say it is definitely separation distress.

It could settle in a few days, or it might be a while. How long do you have the dog for? If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them.

day 6 here, much better behaved.. since Saturday finally got the feeding cycle right. crap/pee is now on schedule.. has not done any chew damage since i removed all the pillows from his environment when i caught him.

barking is the current issue.. still working on that, tho today right before i let him outside i sternly told him in calm but firm command "noooo barrking ok.. noooo barking" to my amazement .. he didnt make one quip. but still he does bark a lot at other times.

about one more week to go till his owner comes back to pick him up.

It sounds like you two have made friends. Now he's not going to want to leave.

Man is dog's best friend, or something like that. I grew up with a dog in the house, and as soon as I was settled in I started having dogs myself. I have two of them now, they really know how to make you feel loved.

What does he eat there..?

There is also the famous Hachiko dog who waited for his owner years at a train station. Made into a movie with Richard Gere.
