I've been having character asasinations for trying to help the mentally ill on Facebook.

I genuinely tried to get people to look at their issues and get out of the loop of dwelling on their issues and take some responsibility for where they are in life. I was cyber bullied to the point of being ganged up on by other Facebook users. I give up. I will let the mentally ill work it out on their own. I'm sorry I tried to help these folk. Facebook no more. Any words would be appreciated. I was really hurt by this.

If you are contemplating suicide, hurting yourself, or you are seriously depressed: please, seek professional help!

Call this hotline (1-800-273-8255) operated by our friends at the Suicide Prevention Lifeline, anytime, for free, professional, and confidential assistance. While other Helpers are likely to reply to your post, please make sure you understand that your use of Help-QA.com falls under or TOS.

Note: I'm a robot that the Help-QA creators programmed. If this response is in error, I apologize, please ignore it.

It was kind of you to try.
This little platform of ours here, might be unique in its receptiveness of any sort of advice and personality. As far as I could tell, fb is founded upon extroversion, so makes sense many of its users are quite confident in their ways, though they might be perceived as flawed, to the point of considering suggestion as a personal attack on their lifestyles.
It's rough, I know. Even on the old site, it's one of the major reasons I ceased counselling save for certain want or dire situations. It made me feel like the helper was gone. Though apparently it isn't so, being here and looking back to the few changes I'd made. Perhaps I can do even better now in some ways, having acquired some subtlety.

You know the cardinal rule....no good deed goes unpunished.

It's difficult to tell what people want help from those that want to cry.

I look at the internet as I would an electrical outlet. My feelings aren't hurt when I put my finger in the light socket.

It's Facebook... A giant mosh pit. You're gonna get hit.

You did what you could. Don't give up.

Dont give up.

Prehaps you need to deliver your advice in a different way. I have experienced depression and to be honest, people telling me I need to do this or that and take responsibility does not help me in the slightest.

Interestingly, I find in dog training too, how I teach people changes from client to client. Some need to be told, some need to be shown, some need to do. I have to change how I deliver the message for it to be heard and have effect in the best way possible.

By far the best advice here.
Doing what is right and needed is sometimes very difficult but you do it anyway.
Look no further for inspiration than the thousands of firefighters in California. If just 2% of them decided to quit, it is estimated the fires would continue to rage twice as long and more structures would be lost.

You can help some people some of the time but you can't help all people all of the time... Some people will see it as criticism while others will see it as pity. All you can do is be yourself. Never give up doing something that you love. Your words/advice may make a difference to someone's life some day.
Keep up the good work.

I have known a number of people in the mental health field. They got out because they found out that 99% of their patients only wanted to talk about their problems, but not solve them.

And ultimately, the person with problems has to work out that set of problems.

People can help--but ultimately the responsibility is on their shoulders.

That's wat i said Sherlock. Exactly wat you said and they cyberbullied me and called me horrible names. All i was doing was trying my hardest to help them. I don't believe not having a degree in psychology means i am UN qualified to help. There hostility and ganging up on me left me really stressed.

It's a touchy subject.

My old organizational psychology professor used to say, "When someone comes and says he or she wants to help you, there are always two questions that you will ask yourself: what is this person's competence for helping me, and what is his/her motivation for wanting to help me?"

Yep. I got all of the IPโ€™s. Havenโ€™t had a repeat IP yet. This post must be showing up somewhere that bots crawl.

Unfortunately IP spoofing is super easy if youโ€™re tech-savvy enough to build a bot like that in the first place.

If it becomes more of a problem, I can add a very simple recaptcha to try get rid of some of them.

The old help site was plagued by idiots who were spamming for diet pills. They were doing it for "search engine optimization." Such people were, of course, the scum of the earth. And, in the old help site, those posts stayed up a very long time before any of the mods took them down. We had suggested before that for a person's first few posts that they would be "held" until a mod could look at them. That would tend to stop the spamming. I think it also helps to complain to the hosting ISP that spammers are at work on behalf of that site.
