Some mundane musings on oils.

I just thought I'd share some of my experiences about conventional and synthetic oils.

When synthetic oils came out, I was an early adopter. Their advantages seemed obvious: more uniform oil molecules, which meant that synthetic oil would begin to flow faster, would provide greater lubricity, would have a greater tolerance for heat, would stick to the cylinder walls longer, and would grow hair on your chest (for women it would mean not having to shave their legs as often). The only problem, and the companies making synthetic oils did not tell you about it, was that synthetic oils would eat up the seals and gaskets of older cars. My 1992 Saab started to leak like a sieve. I also used it in my mother's car, a 1988 Ford Crown Victoria, and it also began to leak like a sieve.

I ended up donating my Saab to the Salvation Army a few years ago (a sad parting, indeed!), and after a transmission job on the Crown Victoria I switched to conventional oils. The Crown Vic stopped leaking. Instead of needing a quart of oil a month, it now needed only about a quart of oil a year.

Now, the Saab made it to about 350,000 miles and was still going.

Now we have a 2015 Ford and it is designed for full synthetic, and that is what I use. When it's really cold, this oil gets flowing much quicker than conventional oil, and that saves you a lot of engine wear.

But if you have an older car, say one made before 2005, I'd suggest that you switch to conventional oil if you are experiencing leaking problems that cannot be otherwise explained.

Yes, Helpbot, I was seriously considering jumping into one of those quart containers of Mobil 1 5W - 20 oils and slipping below the surface . . .

But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I change the oil,
And miles to go before I change the oil.

I got this far thinking you were going to talk about the art of painting...
Funny thing is, I think Bob Ross would have said all the same things.

They've clearly made the seals better to withstand the corrosion on newer cars.

I don't think I've ever not used synthetic.

I've always been intreagued by diesel engines running better on cooking oil than diesel , yet for the most part this is illegal to do unless you declare it, and then the government charge you more.

Me too..lol.
I don't think there is any oil left in oil. It's all additives.
