It’s kind of hard to stay positive when literally everyone is being negative around you.

What do you do to stop yourself from letting others affect your mood? I tend to just soak everyone’s energy up around me. It’s super unhealthy but I don’t know how to stop doing that. So if I’m in a bad mood and someone is happy, I become happy and vice versa.

I know exactly what you mean. If someone is in a bad mood it pisses me off too.

I tend to avoid that person like the plague and do my own thing. Or create an invisible bubble around yourself that emotions cannot penetrate.

I remind myself that its not my problem, I cannot control their emotion

On the Road to Abilene: A Parable
September 16, 2009
by Pete Rivera

I was at a meeting the other day and someone mentioned that they should not all go “On the Road the Abilene.” Apparently it was a term used in that organization, but they did not know the origin. The Road to Abilene is Dr. Jerry B. Harvey's parable about a family trip to Abilene.

They were sitting around on the porch in Coleman, Texas. The temperature was 104 degrees, but the porch was shaded, and everyone was comfortable. Then, Jerry Harvey's father-in-law said, "Let's get in the car and go to Abilene and have dinner at the cafeteria." In the back of Jerry's mind a little voice said, "This is nuts. I don't want to travel 53 miles in the heat of summer in a 1958 Buick to have dinner in a lousy cafeteria."

But Jerry's wife said, "It sounds like a great idea." And Jerry heard himself saying, "Sounds good to me. I hope your mother wants to go." And Jerry's mother said, "Of course I want to go." Four hours and 106 miles later, they returned. The heat had been brutal. Of course there was no air conditioning in the car. Perspiration and dust stuck to their clothing and bodies. The food, as Jerry guessed, had been awful.

Later that evening Jerry said, sarcastically, "It was a great trip wasn't it." Nobody spoke. Finally, his mother in law said, "To tell the truth, I really didn't enjoy it much. I would rather have stayed home, and I wouldn't have gone at all if you hadn't pressured me into it." To which Jerry responded, "I didn't pressure you. I was happy here. I only went to make the rest of you happy." His wife said, "You and Dad and Mamma were the ones who wanted to go. I just wanted to make you happy." And his father in law said, "I never wanted to go to Abilene. I just thought you might be bored sitting at home with the rest of us."

So, they all made a 106 mile round trip in the God forsaken desert under furnace-like conditions to eat unpalatable food in a dingy cafeteria, a trip nobody had been looking forward to and nobody wanted to take. The concept is simple, and it is one that was attributed to the Challenger disaster, “Group Think" . . . https://www.healthcare-informatics.com/blogs/pe...

Moral: do not let "group think" affect your self-esteem or courses of action.

I do find that interesting, Sherlock. There is much to glean from that - not just letting group think affect your self esteem and actions, but to avoid assuming what everyone else is thinking.

I love parables and fables.

You know, Al, that’s actually my favorite thing to say 😊 I love coffee so whenever anyone is cranky, I offer some. There are 3 things that instantly get me out of a bad mood: a hug, a joke, and a cup of coffee!

Not everyone is so easily appeased 😪

Joy is difficult to attain.
When in a bad mood, hike to higher ground (wether it be in or out of the mind).
Staying in a bad mood is a sign of spiritual defeat.

Most of you know I've had difficulties in the past with my Mother In Law,she seriously used to suck the life out of me. I used to try to avoid her by going up the stairs and taking Valium. 😂 ( No,seriously I don't believe in drugs but I could've done with some when she was around)
It's hard being around people who try to bring you down, Araz. I get exactly where you are coming from,if they are only there to hinder instead of support then your better off without them.

I tend to do the same.

I have, however, been doing a lot of introspection as the year was closing, trying to search my mental record for mistakes I made, and how I would do things differently in the future.

There were both pluses and minuses. I went to Africa three times on missions to aid the UN, and I think those turned out rather well. I went with Mrs. Sherlock to some beautiful sights, such as Little River Canyon in Alabama, where I learned that a range of mountains existed on the Eastern seaboard about 1,100 million years ago, and were as tall or taller than the Himalayas (the Grenville Mountains), and we also explored some remote areas where Bigfoot was reported to have been sighted. We didn't even see Littlefoot, however, much less Bigfoot. Where would Bigfoot buy his shoes, anyway? And we experienced that partial eclipse at our location, when everything was bathed in this eldritch midday light . . . most unusual, indeed!

And I closed out my PI business, letting one of our partners have it. We all did. One must choose one's partners very, very carefully--and even then there are no guarantees.

Well, of course, there was more, but these were the highlights. I am hoping that 2018 will be a better year.

Here we are, living in the Third Millennium, and things seem like they should just be better than they are!

I just boiled some water out from my 180ft deep mountain well. Just ground up some dark French roast beans. Putting it in a French press right now.

I would love a muse for a friend.. seems like everyones (in person) either wants to hear themselves talk in a form of venting.. which is primarily negative for the most part OR being excellent at akward silence.. i just feel like i have to tap into my creative mana.. and use up all i can to make things more interesting.. .. i've been tapped out.. since quite a while for my own reasons.

However.. Reading the following post, I guess its a bonus if you are a giver, grab some donuts, coffee..provide if you will.. may it be a calander.. something usefull for the other.. might cheer em up and they'll rejoice and you'll win some points. you felt good... they may talk neg.. but you feel good cuz you helped their day in a way.

That was seriously entertaining. Thanks for the import Evansent.
I suppose it all really boils down to what we cut our teeth on.
Honestly, I know tea is better for you than coffee, but I prefer (not always), coffee.
I once brewed up some tea and made the mistake of making it too strong. Don't get me wrong, the flavour was fantastic, but I spent the next hour barfing my guts up because (as I came to learn later), there's far more caffeine in dark tea than coffee. Having my fill was an over-dose.
But I still drink it.
