Art lessons.

I'm having the worst mental block trying to come up with exciting art lessons. Lesson writing itself is the most tedious of tasks. But when I try to think of something fun and engaging for students, I go round and round with no reward.

Maybe if I had a really cool artist to put at the center, I could come up with a neat activity!

Art and artist enthusiasts, please lend me your advice!!

Not an artist, but when I have mental blocks or want to improve a skill in some way, I think of a project/goal to try to accomplish that uses the skill.

Need to get better at fine detail? Paint a tree, where each individual leaf is drawn with detail.
Need flow? Draw a scene with water. Doesn't have to be the focus, but it should be an attention point.

it would help if you told us what kind of art and the age of the students.

You say you're going around in circles with no reward - what does that mean?
Did you conceive some ideas for how to go about that, yet discarded them as being insufficiently fun & engaging?

Throughout history, artists were most revered for their unique perspectives rather than technical prowess (admittedly, this measure eludes my comprehension). It would be no small feat to see through their eyes, just as it would be to immerse oneself in one's own world to find their style. But I dunno what it's like for sure.

How old are these art student? Kindergarteners finger painting or people who are already artists and who want to get better? I've taken some art classes, I used to actually be able to draw and I studied architecture.

Give them a sheet of paper and tell them one side needs to be as dark as they can make it and fade into white. Make them draw lines 1/16th of an inch apart all the way across the paper. No instruments just freehand lines and none of them should touch. Go outside and sit as a group in front of whatever building you came out of and tell them to draw the building. Draw the classroom. These are just a few of the things I remember doing, they must have stuck in my mind for a reason.

Have them do different techniques! Tesselation project by cutting out a shape that you can repeat over and over, pointillism lots of dots of paint to make a picture of something that might seem boring, go outside and fling some paint around a la Jackson Pollock, paint a bookshelf together, partner and draw each other a bunch of times with quick three minute sketches, make art out of trash you found outside, have them try to capture a dream or a feeling however they want!
