Heyooo
Just figured Iโd make an account here. Itโs pretty cool to see the site revived, lots of memories. If anyone remembers me, say hi! Chances are I wonโt be able to respond quickly or be active like the old days; life is different and a lot busier now, but I hope to chat with you guys at least a bit!
Hello there. Welcome back.
Help me with: We have another hurricane coming this way.
Pianoman! ๐
Now all we need is Nante and Ikari!

Right?? I haven't talked to them in forever. I see the occasional post from them on FB, but that's about it.

Nobody has known how to get in touch with them.
How did you find out about the site?
Hello, pianoman.
Pray tell what's been going on when you've a moment to spare, sure has been a while.

Didn't you always have a keyboard as your avatar? Piano not computer of course.. Great to have you back. I had forgotten about Nante and Ikari until Rockster mentioned them. This whole everybody coming out of the closet and posting real pictures thing is kind of neat. I'm changing my avatar right now... well okay maybe it's not me but it's and artists rendition of what I may look like. Wow is Becca here yet? Yeti sent me to a Photobucket account that had this picture and now I have to find her too. Time for everyone to find more old members.

I got an e-mail from a mysterious address telling me a new Help site was live. Figured I'd give it a look.

Why hello! It's certainly been a while. Recently it's just been college and work. I'm a semester out from graduating, then I'm hoping to nail an English teaching assistant job in Japan. What's been up with you??

Hey Ralph! Yeah, I think the keyboard avi was the first one I used. I remember changing it fairly often. I used to be real weird about sharing my face with the internet, but recently I've grown more comfortable with it.

How have you been?
Thanks Pepper! As for how I've been, the above replies pretty much sum it up. How about yourself??
I went to Japan with the SO and my cousin for a month earlier this year. ๐ It was tons of fun! Would be awesome to live there! Best of luck on that adventure!
Send a mysterious email to some of the others you know from back in the day. ๐

Sounds very nice...the teaching in Japan. I would have loved to have done that, but as you get older, dreams sorta fade....not really fade, but life gets in the way, I guess. So do it while you're young and have a great time! :)
Thanks! I definitely want to get over there in the next year or so... The program I'm looking at doesn't tend to take anyone older than 25, and I'm not too far off from that. Here's hoping everything goes to plan...

Sweet! I'm actually going there on vacation for two weeks after Christmas. I guess it's sort of a way of really finding out if it's for me.
And maybe I will!
Just hope Kim Jung un does not decide to test everyone's patience.
Help me with: We have another hurricane coming this way.
I'm more worried about the winter Olympic Games in Pyeong Chang, South Korea. They start in two months... those athletes could be in danger. Old pianoman can take care of himself, if Kimmy boy messes with him he'll just sing him a song. He's the pianoman.

There's a guy on kickstarter named Ikari from Glasgow, UK trying to raise money for some oveanwaves project. Is that him? Youtube has some videos posted by a guy named Nante and they are like video games. I put a link there... maybe I should just be dropping links to this site everywhere I go. Like Johnny Appleseed
And how old were you when Help started Pianoman? It was like 15 years ago I got there... was everybody except me and soco a child? I'm starting to feel old, and well just look at soco. What a dog she's turned into, right? ROFLOL

Longtime fan of japanese culture and all, been studying some jlpt material for a few months. Too timid to leave home for a visit, nor talking to anyone if I had.
May it work out well for ya. Any other requirements remaining to be met? Does your experience as pianist count for anything? (or is a relevant occupation yonder?)

Unlikely. Commander ikari is a pseudonym - a character in a series. ๐

Hahaha, the whole NK situation is a little intimidating, but I think it's far more so for my parents...

Nah, I don't think that's Ikari. He actually lived in my city in the old days, no idea if that's still the case.
I was 13 when I joined I think... I'm 23 now. It amazes me that it's been that long... But a good chunk of us were essentially children, hahaha.

All they require for me to enter the program is a bachelors, but by the time I apply I'll have about 6 years of teaching experience in piano, a basic TEFL certificate, and I just recently started working as an assistant ESL teacher, which is a job I hope to keep up to the point where I leave. So I'm hoping all of those factors combined will make me a likely candidate.

Huh, small world. Did you meet in person afterwards?
Test or not, that sounds like somewhat of a working knowledge. Back in my university there was only this one semester course (~10hrs a week), which a friend claimed wasn't all that helpful. Maybe more were available for other majors.
That's quite the list, considering you've yet to reach 25. 'round here the average kid likely would have achieved nothing more than a few years of service, a degree and maybe some time in a completely irrelevant job(s) in the food industry to make ends meet. You've gotta strut that stuff with a hefty dose of confidence and they won't be able to turn you down.
Hope you're not undergoing excessive stress... for what it's worth, rooting for you here.

Nah, we never did, unfortunately.
Honestly, I'm doing a lot of linguistics work alongside my Japanese, and just based on what I've learned about second-language education, solid Japanese language education is hard to come across, at least in the U.S. The program at my school is nothing special either, and we supposedly have a pretty prestigious language program... But yeah, I'm pretty happy with the experience that I have. The only thing that concerns me is that just about everyone going through this process at my school is trying to get into the same program. Japan is a popular destination for students looking to teach ESL, whether they know the language or not.
Hahaha, I appreciate it. To be perfectly honest, things are pretty stressful at the moment, especially with finals fast approaching. I'm hanging in there, but it's rough-going.
Wishing you the best of luck Pianoman. You have come this far not to see your dreams come through. My compliments to the support of your family.
Help me with: We have another hurricane coming this way.
Ah well. We'll get to meet everyone eventually in the helpcom reunion, some sunny day.
Indeed? If not through school, what kind of linguistics work are you referring to? Textbooks?
There's always someone better, yet motivation decides in the end. If you fail, you get back up. Try a different approach when needed. It's alright to be concerned regarding competition, as long as it doesn't affect your performance & plans excessively in the long term.
If conversation helps, feel free to drop by for a spell and speak your mind. It's what we're here for. And then return to your studies. โบ

Actually I'm a ling minor, and getting my basic TEFL certificate involves me taking a bunch of linguistics classes.
Yeah, I have a lot of programs lined up actually, so if the one I'm prioritizing doesn't work out then there are backups.
I most likely will! If not to seek advice, at least to vent.
Things have been busy, hectic, boring, stressful, crazy, uneventful, and all things inbetween.. ..
Just glad to have this place back and seeing the old gang coming back together

Aww, sounds rough. Hopefully things calm down at some point.
Same here, it's neat to see a bunch of the old community again.
