I haven’t gotten any cravings to smoke (Day 10 Nicotine free!) but I’ve been told I’m crankier, I have a gross cough that won’t go away, and I’m tired all the time.
How long until these symptoms go away? Anyone else here quit smoking and have advice?
Nope, sorry. But rooting for ya!

Thanks Yeti! 😊
Well, that's great news, Araz! Here's something for you to feast your eyes on:
In 2000, 67,600 women died from lung cancer. During 2010–2014, almost 282,000 women (56,359 women each year) will die from lung cancer. Smoking increases the risk of dying from coronary heart disease among middle-aged women by almost five times.
CDC - Fact Sheet - Tobacco-Related Mortality - Smoking & Tobacco Use
www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets...
And you are probably too young to remember the late, great Yul Brynner, who died from lung cancer as a result of smoking:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTCkO8dwTf4
Whatever you do, Araz, just don't smoke!!!
Of course, with all due respect, my dad died at 69 from lung cancer. The cigarettes didn't help. Even at the end, what he didn't lose, was his humor.
Of the things I hate in this world, smoking is in the top five. I was in the military at the time the commander or first sergeant would say, "Smoke 'em if you got 'em." Never mind that nonsmokers didn't want to breathe in all of that second-hand smoke.
My father smoked a lot. In Alaska, when it was 40 below zero Fahrenheit outside, he'd light up and fill the cabin of the car with cigarette smoke. If I complained, because the smoke burned my eyes, he'd tell me to shut up. Opening a window in that cold was really not an option. Other people's smoking has already taken a toll on my lifespan.
Now medical researchers have shown that THIRD hand smoke, i.e., residues from cigarette smoke, can embed within upholstery, curtains and carpets and further inflict the health hazards of smoking on people in that environment.
I am sure that all people involved in the production and marketing of cigarettes are all going to hell.
After all, it's the only "legal" product, that when used as directed, will kill you.
I tell people who want to ban guns to get cigarettes banned first if saving lives is truly their motivation!
I don’t miss the cigarettes! I’m just not a fan of the constant gross coughing (add nausea)
So when you quit smoking, according to Mayo Clinic:
“Tobacco smoke slows the normal movement of the microscopic hairs (cilia) that line your lungs. When you stop smoking, the cilia become active again. As the cilia recover and the mucus is cleared from your lungs, you might cough more than usual — perhaps for several weeks.“
It explains the cough and nausea but it’s so vague about the timeline :(

Actually, in heavy smokers, the cilia cells die. Wonder why smokers are always coughing? The coughing moves the phlegm in the lungs around, because there are so little cilia left to do the job.
I remember giving a ride to another American in Kuwait. This guy had what I'd call "corpse breath," because he was such a heavy smoker. It was almost as if we had a zombie in the back seat, because this smoker's exhalations were so foul smelling!

My dad has that problem :( He’s 71 years old and has been smoking since he was 14. I shouldn’t have ever started 😪 my husband isn’t quitting, but I really just want to be healthier.
I smoked about 3-4 a day for the past 5 years. I really hope my cillia cells aren’t dead! I just can’t wait until I start to feel better!
I quit smoking for 3 months once... never had that problem... just the urge... then I went camping with my mom and well camping with my mom made me start again..
I'd say its all in the mind, reprogram it
and keep thinking of that nasty cough how it would get worse if continued smoking and likely turn into cancer or emphysema which both kill
and cancer and emphysema can be a long painful death if you're not in the death with diginity states
My grandfather died of emphysema after decades of smoking. He was in his 80s. He would have lived to be 100 if he hadn't smoked.
He died trying to take one last breath--but his lungs just couldn't do it.
If I were the Emperor of the World, I'd crucify the executives of all the tobacco companies . . . I'd set up crosses on the national mall and have all of them nailed to one. The suffering and premature deaths they have inflicted constitute a crime against humanity.

It wouldn't matter. Every individual makes their personal choice.
I fee the same way about alcohol as you do about tobacco.
Went to the grocery store and waited behind a very skinny and hollow man at the ATM (some years older than me) and he had that familiar bar & aftershave smell that I associate with alcoholics.
As he turned, disappointed at the result of his account, I couldn't help but notice he had P'd himself - he didn't know or didn't care...

I know what you mean, but at least I never met an alcoholic who would try to wrestle you to the ground, and pour booze down your throat--but smokers had no problem spewing smoke where you had to breathe it!
The alcoholics I knew never tried to force to drink, but the smokers forced me to smoke through inhaling their second-hand smoke!
I don't think there is anyone here NOT pulling for you. Keep it up and let us know whatever we can do to encourage you.
You got this....

I quit smoking years ago and believe me it was the best thing I ever done,
As for the "coughing" you'll find it can grow gradually worse over time. You might also find yourself with flu like symptoms (it's a side effect of nicotine withdrawal)
I think everyone who quits smoking gets"cranky" hell I know I did! And eat omg I never stopped.
I replaced my addiction for another addiction which was chocolate..
How are you finding it when it comes to sweet stuff?
Whew, so many responses! I’m sorry I haven’t gotten a chance to reply to everyone, life has been crazy busy!
To answer some of the questions I’ve seen - I recently also cut out sugar and carbs from my diet and haven’t been craving sugar at all.
This is day 11 - only 10 more days to make it a habit, I guess lol.
I started taking mucinex which has helped! Maybe it’s breaking up some of this gross phlegm?
I’m really not craving anything at all, I’m just irritable.
At day 30 celebrate by rewarding yourself in a small way. Try to find something you really like preferably non-food related. A new dress or fancy vase of flowers for instance.

Indeed, it is a mental thing. Mind over matter.

That cough is really good for you. It is clearing your lungs out. The worse your lungs are, the longer the cough will stick around. Quitting now is a great thing though, congratulations!

Thanks! It's starting to clear up a little bit. :) Day 14 - Not a single craving yet. Hubby went out to smoke. When he came back, I felt like the smell was everywhere. STILL didn't experience any cravings!
How does the smell affect you? How do you feel about the smell? Do you like it? Do you think it smells badly?
My mom smoked as a teenager and quit it when she had kids. She says she still loves the smell of cigarette smoke.
One of my friends said the same - he said it’s been 10 years since he quits and he still randomly craves it when he smells it.
I think it smells not great. My nose is still stuffy so I can’t smell as well as I normally can, but when I kissed Andy bye this morning, he smelled like it which was not preferable but not the worst thing ever.
Hopefully no news is good news.
Still praying for her though...

I definitely don’t have the time to binge watch anything right now but I’ll give it a shot 😊
Just find the Tribbles episode and watch. It.
Tell you everything you need to know.

I haven’t started to feel nauseous around smokers yet but I hope that starts soon. I only have strong cravings when we’re drinking and he smokes. He tries to sneak away but I swear it’s like I suddenly have the power of super smelling, I can smell it from a mile away! 😂
Yep that's the worst. I smoked my head off when I drank so when I quit you could say I turned into a hermit for fear of smoking again. I wouldn't suggest you do the same as me though haha.
Does he not have mints or anything before he kisses you?
I hated my Hubbys smokey breath. I can honestly say "quitting smoking was the best thing I have ever done"
We are not happy you quit Araz.
We're ecstatic! Celebrate your success. You are not completely out of the woods but your path is clear and straight. Continue to be strong.

It's weird I'm smoking now more than I ever have and I don't even like it. I thought it was a gross nasty habit and didn't start until I was 37.. I was on a trip to Florida and my wife was smoking in the car for 10 hours straight so I told her she might as well give me one too. An hour later I asked for one more and she told me to buy my own. That was the first pack of cigarettes I ever bought, at 37 years old! I could still never smoke until noon and I had eaten, they made me feel sick but I puffed away about a third of a pack a day.
Then the best thing happened, they stopped making the cigarettes I smoked and I couldn't find one I liked so I just stopped. So I smoked for about 5 years, then quit for about 10 years, then started smoking again about 5 or 6 years ago and I can smoke a pack every day now... I don't get it. I don't even enjoy it but man do I crave it.
Help me with: I need help.
I have observed scores of people trying to quit. The most successful method was quitting cold turkey. No patches, no gum, no pills. Just quit. You may be antsy for a few days, but then the nicotine receptors in your brain start to shrink, and the craving will eventually go away.
The lowest form of life on this planet is the owners and executives of tobacco companies. I was reading some old issues of Field and Stream online and the tobacco companies filled the pages of that magazine with ads. Always portrayed was the virile, hairy-chested man with chiseled features--never the guy dying in the hospital with tubes hooked up to him.
I have had cravings ALL day :( But I’m ignoring them!
@DocteurRalph our stories on how we started are very similar. My best friend smoked and I started at 25. It’s 6 years later now! She quit about 3 years ago.
@Sherlock It’s true - Lung cancer is devastating and should be the face of big tobacco. 😔

The cigarette packets have horrendous pictures on them, some make you feel physically sick.
I'm surprised how people can still smoke when they see those images.
See for yourself.

Yep I think it's a great deterrent.
