Yes.

I'm fond of Twitter.

But both are echo chambers.

Reddit ๐Ÿ’ฏ for me. I prefer Twitter and Instagram over Facebook. I have to take a break from those platforms periodically too lol

facebook is the only thing i have ever used apart of this site. And the only reason is that i stick with it is that i keep my pictures there backed up.

Btw, Littlenick, don't you have too many 'complaining' posts these days? I remember you like the 'funny' guy from the old site.. :) ..not complaining here, lol

I'm like Peter: all of my photos from the last 10 years are on fb. My kids do instagram, so I got an account, but I'm not "comfortable" using it; just not used to it, I think

But social media is starting to be bothersome and sometimes I think it contributes to mild depression

Took the words right out of my mouth. If you hadn't said it all these other people would have. And then I would have.

I never liked Facebook. Not at all not from day 1. I was on MySpace so you see, they have always been the enemy. Ever since they stole most users from the more expressive MySpace, to the individuality crushing, corporate exploitation and experimentation tool that it was always meant to be, I have hated Facebook. If I weren't on MySpace I would have hated Facebook. Facebook is a tool. I'm sorry for those users who got to be a tool too. Most of my Facebook activity is not personal and I don't really care what companies have from it because the scrap of info on there is info they probably already knew anyway. Companies, particularly in marketing departments, or in Facebook's case, "Marketing and Social Experimentation Department," are nosy.

Facebook got started by a nosy brat wanting to be into and expose his classmates business.

I pretty much only use FB.

I have Twitter but only occasionally look at it.
I don't think I've ever even written anything.

I hate that memories thing on fb!

Thatโ€™s actually probably my favorite feature on FB. ๐Ÿ˜…

The 5-10 years ago pictures were the best years of my life, and it brings some pleasant memories back. I definitely miss it, but itโ€™s enjoyable to reminisce as well. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'm with you on that time period being some of the best of my life, but my outlook is very different.
I don't need to see pictures to remind me about what I had and lost.
Everywhere I go and every thing I see and do holds memories I don't want, I don't need FB rubbing it in as well.

was reading my journal just a while ago ..

found a bit i wrote about fb

"i'm going to set myself apart from the rest of folks who use Facebook on a daily basis. as a long time member, i have seen the growth of what it used to be and what it is now.

Facebook originally was a secret college members-only network as a great way to find out where the party's at. and send retarded notice of cheers and poking.

Now its a faux family album, .. life track. .. an attention whoring platform. ..or a bombastic meme trolling .. nevertheless i'm sure there's many ways to look at it now.

not saying its a bad thing..

it doesn't pique my interest my anymore, in fact i'm real annoyed by it now. so instead. I, from now on, henceforth will be making a statment by installing my many methods of mockery of what it is now it."

Pretty accurate....

I've just obtained a chrome extension called "fb purity". As far as I can tell, it has a filter for every single type of feed item in existence (shared a memory, your memories, trending posts, photos by subject matter or user to name a few). If you're referring to the app variety though, I'm not sure.

I'm not very technical, as you prob know, but is guess that memories thing would be an app, although I don't recall choosing it, and have tried many ways to disable it.
It posts less than it used to as I always select the 'I want to see less of this' option, but I'd really like to have none of it.

Is this something you obtained from fb?

I tried to sign up there but I couldn't verify my address because USPS does not delliver to street addresses here. They suggested to get some members in my neighborhood to vouch for me, but there was only one member and he/she was gone for the summer. That one apparently has withdrawn or been banned. For a long time I got updates for the adjoining neighborhood in the next town. That activity has declined to zero and I am now billed as the founding member of my neighborhood.

Ya gotta face one fact: the only thing to do in this town is go to another town!

Facebook was not that bad but I am related to some very negative people and I got tired of ignoring their bad manners so I closed my account.

Oh, right, sorry. Here's the link:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fbflu...
And this is their site, if you'd like to read a bit more, or if you have a different browser.
https://www.fbpurity.com/
https://www.fbpurity.com/install.htm

By app, I meant using fb on a smartphone - this solution was created only for pcs, as phones' apps don't permit any sort of fiddling ordinarily. It's a bit challenging to get rid of ads there, even.
An independent developer created it. The company would have little interest in anyone filtering out sponsored ads and content.

And don't worry, it's quite straightforward to use. Once installed, go to your profile home page, and there will be a little line after create post on the right, "F.B. Purity hid: 0 app [ Show ] 0 extra [ Show ] โ‡”"
The arrow expands / shrinks the view, and clicking on the fb purity link will open a page with many filtering & customisation tickboxes. Hover the cursor over a tickbox to show what it does. In general, checked means hide that particular sort of content. Ads come pre-ticked 'fcourse, and the memories are under "Various post types" -> "Shared a memory" + "Your memory" prolly (would recommend reviewing the entire list once). Press "save changes" when you're done, which will refresh the page.
If there's any problem, let me know.

Never thought I would see or hear of Nextdoor (app) on this site. I happen to like mine. But it is more local and most of the people on it care for one another. The posts vary from lost and found pets to petty vandalism in the area. The varied Interest groups also let you see just those subjects you want to see. So posts about yoga or underwater basket weaving I don't have to read. Another thing I like is all the Admins are hidden but respond very quickly to problems.

I guess Nextdoor is good, depending how you use it and where you live.

The thing I hate about facebook, was, in order to require you to use their phone app, they stopped sending notification emails when, let's say, you get a pm from someone. So they made their product worse, deliberately, in order to manipulate their customers behavior.

Amoral behavior in my opinion. I do use it though, but just have an alternate mode of contact that I rarely check up on.

Facebook basically takes the book on user experience and treats it like a list of things to avoid.

Gets really annoying in the webdev field. Anytime I hear somebody start a phrase with โ€œBut Facebook does...โ€ Iโ€™m out. ๐Ÿ˜‚
